Battery Replacement

I have a two-battery setup on my little boat, one for the big motor, and one for the trolling motor. One of the batteries won’t take a charge and needs to be replaced.

Question: do (or should) I replace both batteries, or can I just replace the bad one, granted I replace it with the same brand and specs? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

If the battery is still good I would wait till it goes bad before I replaceing it. Use the newer battery on the cranking side! When I buy a battery I always put on a sticker telling the date of replacement so I can see how long it lasts and judge buying a new one of the same brand! If you don’t have a digital TM try to get one, its better than doubles the battery life!

BB, hopefully you are using a deep cycle for the TM??

No need, IMO for that on the cranking side.

You could get a free load test on good battery at most auto parts stores.

one only needs to replace both batteries at the same time if they are connected together either in series or parallel. i think if connected together the new battery will take on the characteristics of the old battery. a brief time connected will not hurt (such as jump starting a battery. jan

Are both batteries the same age? If so, I would replace them both.

I agree with LE ,all my cranking batteries get replaced according to their age.Batteries never die at a convenient time or location.

Four years is just about it usually. May not be dead, but you will have lost some capacity by then then.

If it’s lead acid you may be able to recondition it

Skinflint

The Navy never reconditioned submarine batteries, always replaced near the end of the life cycle determined by age and test discharges.

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■, y’all. If I replace both, should I get a starter for the big motor and a deep cycle for the trolling and accessories? Or should I get two deep cycles? Or should I get two dual-purpose?

Dual purpose equals not very good at either purpose. Stick with a starting battery for your outboard motor and deep cycle for the trolling motor.

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

So, if I buy two new batteries, do I just switch the charger back and forth between them? Will doing so hurt them? Thanks again for the ■■■■■■■■.

The big motor should take care of charging the cranking battery. Unless it’s been sitting for and extended period, should be good to go.
