battle vs slammer

i have been trying to decide which to get the slammer 260 or the battle 2000. i fish braid and noticed that the slammer has the level line wrap system. is this for braid? i see the battle has the rubber on the spool for braid but does it have the same wrapping system as the slammer? Is the drag on the battle as strong as the slammer? any other pros/cons?

The Battle are an awesome reel. I have the 2000, 3000, and 5000 and I’m about to order a 4000. They have plenty strong drag (How much drag do you NEED on a 2000? I usually have drag set at 1/4-1/3 of the breaking strength of the line.) They are very smooth and braid ready. I just got my 2000 and haven’t caught a fish on it but I’ve put hundreds of fish in on my 5000 and 3000 and if it performs as well as those do, I’ll have no problems with it.

i fish the battle 3000 and its great! The battle does have the superline spool for braid, drag wise the battle has its name for a reason. I think both have the HT 100 Drag systems and full metal bodies tho. Cant tell you much about the level line system, but i give thumbs up to the Battle! You could prob find out more on the Penn Website.

How about wind knots with the battles casting braided line with artificials? That would be my main concern…

I have both; 2 Slammer 360s and a Battle 3000. I bought the slammers used from a guide 3 years ago and I use them on every trip. The Battle is still new with only a fews reds up to 25" under its belt.

If you plan on casting artificial a lot with it then I would go with a battle b/c it is lighter and handles a little easier. Overall I think the Slammer is a better/more robust reel and is very simple to fix/clean if needed. Both are very good and neither have issue with tangles or wind knots. I just have a lot of time with the Slammer and it has always performed.

I use both battles and slammers in several different models. I can not say anything about the long term attributes of the battles but they have been great reels so far. They have smooth drags with good power and they handle braid very well. As for the slammers, their are just tanks!!! They are not the lightest reels on the market by any means but they can take some abuse. The slammers also have a good drag. I use both models for guiding and they have not failed me yet. With the models you are looking at be aware that the lighter the line you are using the more apt you are to getting line twist. It has been in my experience that the battles take the edge in that category.

Battle all the way!!! I have two and they are awesome for the price. I have 20lb sufix 832 braid on my 4000 and I have never had trouble with windknots. My cousin used to work with Penn so he knows the ins and outs for the battle. He highly recommends it!!! Best reel for the price in my eyes

Got to fish my…er, I mean my son’s Battle 3000 some more today. Caught 4 flounder and one red today on it… nothing huge, but anytime using it I enjoyed how smooth it was. I have it on a 6’6" Star Aerial rod which is not my favorite, but for $60 and a break it, bring it back to Haddrel’s, and get a new one on the spot it is the right rod for my son.

I am in process of building a ultra high modulus graphite spinning rod rated for 8-15# line. I think I will be putting a Battle 2000 on it and using it for mainly a trout and finesse rod. A slammer would be too heavy, and for less than $100, the Battle performs as well or better than the Shimano Stradic and Saragosa I have.

Shimano all the way. Bought four various Battles only to have three go to the shop in the first year…first two months…

Washed and lubes each trip.

Penn went to $^&* when they decided China was the place to make reels. Have had zero issues with all of our Shimanos. The Stradic and Spheros have been put through hell, and still perform flawlessly, the Slammers I had turned to junk in one season (snapped the handles on 2 and had corrosion issues on all of them). I will NEVER buy another Penn spinning reel…SHIMANO!!!

thanks guys. I have many shimano(bait casting and spinning) reels and I love their rods too. I was kind of wanting to buy a penn since i only have one and its awesome. I found it in my dads basement and its a pretty old penn 10. got to be from the 80’s. When my dad gave it to me he said,“the new penns arent as well made as that one is”. Anyway, i think i may just get Stradic. I know you can go wrong w a shimano and after talking w my brother, who is an expert on fishing reels, for an hour last night I think i will just stick with them. My brother was about to send me one of his stradics but realized what he was doing and decided not to. Its alot to spend on a reel but fishing is my favorite thing in the world to do. So, i am sure i will get my 200 bucks worth. Thanks again for your thoughts guys.

Penn Battle all the way…
I have a Stradic too, which is a great reel, but the Battle is a great value for the $.

well guys, looks like i will be spending the money i have saved for a reel on minn kota and Johnson parts now instead of a new reel. My tm started smoking when i step on the pedal to make it go. I noticed it right away and the motor still works fine. It just smokes a little smells like a wire or something is loose and burning. Glad i noticed it right when it started as i think it could have been alot worse. Also, the check engine light came on on my Ocean pro 200 again. I thought we finally got that fixed but i guess its back the the old drawing board w that. Guess the reel purchase will be delayed a bit. No reason for a new reel when you cant use it. I am really bummed out right now. Probably wont be on the site for a while b/c it makes me want to fish and now i cant. Yall catch em for me while i am down for the count!
