Weve been taking advantage of this nice weather since the rain decided to give us a break… Fishing a lot for sharks…yeah…when i say that my daddy looks at me as if i have two heads and says…" “what in the world do you want to catch a dang shark for??” working night 12s leaves a lot of time to fish…for which i am so happy…what i am not so happy about is that daddys new motor has been in the shop for two weeks…so no crabbing trips:frowning_face:. Hopefully boat will be ready by saturday…Sure hope so anyway.
Daddy says he cant wait to get back to crabbing…cause mommas about to kill him with yard work
anyhow…we have fished the harbor, folly and stono. Bite good most days…but like they say…a day fishing is always better than a day at work…or sitting on the couch. Little shrimp seem to be thick in the creeks…thats a good sign. Found a new bait…had two of those prepackaged packs of little tiny minature marshmellow sized scallops in the freezer…used them for bait and caught reds and sheephead on them…they were yumming them up!..well guess they got good taste in food too. so now have a new bait to use. really cheap in the frozen seafood section. heres some pics…as always…hope you all are having some good days fishing to round out the summer too.
lots of little trouts and reds
roo has been helping me catch crabs for shark and red bait…she walks along the beach and when I see her stop and stare…i scoop them up with the net from the edge of the water:smiley:
nice pics Penny!! We got skunked all around…no crabs,no fish, and only bait shrimp caught this week. We were all around Folly with no luck. Boo Hoo! Dang we had fun though!!!
Thanks for letting us into your life again Penny!!! Always hit your posts first thing when I see you’ve put up another thread because I know there will be some quality photography showing more Roo antics and usually some nice fish or crabs to boot! I still think you need to publish these!!!
Just another great post! It’s always a pleasure reading your threads and these pictures are just getting better and better and I noticed even more in the photography section! I love fishing and everything there is that surrounds it!
“you win some, you lose some…but nothing beats getting some!”
hey vin/// lol…guess i should have been more specific…all of the fish swam away except for the bonnet head in the boat who was invited home for dinner as we had some friends who had never eaten shark. i love shark…gut and belled it …ice it and clean as soon as you can and its good. the stuff in the picture are friend chicken breast strips…
when is megs bday? i too am sad time has gone by so fast and we have still not met
Yep…he met the tip of my big knife I keep in my tackle box
As far as what to do after…they say you have to keep the head and tail intact…don’t know if that goes for bonnets since there is no minimum length…but I usually kill them…then cut the bottom from the poop hole to the top of the head and pull all the guts out…save in a bucket for chum ;)… Then I cut the fins almost off…and partially separate the head to allow it to bleed even more…i later partially seperate the tail too…but leave them attached, For regs /identity in case you areif you are stopped… ( Sharks pee through their skin…and they say they release it even more when they die…so you want to get the skin off as soon as possible to avoid that strong amonia taste.) after bleeding them out for a few minutes i then i pack their belly full of ice and ice the fish down . When I filet them…(some people skin like a cat fish but I filet) … I leave a little meat on the skin unlike how I filet a fish , to keep that added ammonia taste off too…but that’s just me…then I cut the red part as well as the belly part off of the meat I keep… I have cut the fins, gutted and skinned them most of the way out on the water before but left meat attached to body with a little of the front skin. (did this by cut/flapping the sides…flip back and take off as much skin as possible). But again. left the head and tail…keeping it legal. . It’s just NOT a fish you want to let sit iced or otherwise for too long…but one when handled properly is very good to eat. I like to cook mine in large scallop sized pieces. Some people soak in buttermilk/milk but if you handle it properly this isn’t needed. To fry I dredge in egg, then seafood breader.
