Bent Propeller shaft

2005 90HP Johnson shaft is bent. Do you have to drop the lower unit or will the shaft just slide out. Any other stuff I should do while Im at it?

usually you have to pull the gear apart to replace that shaft…how did you bend it?

I believe it was a rock. The rubber hub did not slip but it tore the prop all up and twisted the shaft. Also ripped a good portion of the skeg off.

I hope you didnt spill your beer.

that sucks…those gears are precision tuned… make sure you get someone to do it who has a specialized skill at rebuilding lower units…

I did that very same thing on a 75 Merc. - Get your checkbook out - Used Lower Units are even extrmely expensive.

That can be an insurance job depending on your coverage. If your shaft is twisted it’s a pretty serious impact. Too often the gears can have hidden cracks as a result. I did a similar repair years ago and the gears looked fine, so they went back in. A few weeks later they self destructed. The next impact job I had I looked very close at the gears and found a tiny hairline crack at the base of several teeth. I replaced those gears and checked every one from that point on. About half of them were cracked.
