I’m thinking of putting Avet EX 30’s on my boat this season for trolling, and some bottom fishing too. Do any of you have any experience with these reels? Their specs look great for trolling, and Avets have a good reputation for bottom fishing reels. Can anyone give me some good or bad reviews of the Avets?
I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Avet EX30’s for trolling. If I were to pick up a set of 30 lb reels, they’d be in my top 3 choices.
For bottom fishing, they might be a bit overkill in relation to line capacity and weight. The HX works beautifully for bottom fishing, has more than enough line capacity when loaded down with 80 lb braid and is relatively light while still being sturdy enough to put the heat to the fish when you need to button down the drag.

Would you hesitate to troll with an HX with 80lb braid? I would think it would work fine for dolphin
I would not hesitate to troll with an HX with 80 lb braid. I’ve done it plenty of times to add another line to my spread in a pinch and use a longer top shot as the braid doesn’t have any stretch to it.
I fish with lots of different Avets. The best all around would be the HX. Braid backing and mono top shot will let you do just about anything with that reel.
I troll EX-30’s and they are great, but I would not use them for bottom fishing.

Caveat - I am not an expert by any measure, but I have read the whole internet as far as fishing is concerned . You will see discussion on both sides, and there is a lot of hubbub about abrasion resistance vs bite resistance, etc etc… Here is one mans opinion:
According to what I’ve read and seen - mono is supposed to be better for trolling because:
Mono stretches on the initial strike. Helps the hookup ratio since it lets the fish take it a bit before it comes taught and lines the hook up. Sometimes a little bit of give can help with a strike from a big, fast fish like tuna or billfish.
Mono is less expensive - you need a lot of line to fill trolling reels those long-run tuna and bigger fish.
Braid will straight up saw your finger off. This is bad. Specifically, when trying to boat the fish, you have to grab hold of the line boatside and when trying to guide the line back on the reel and the fish takes another screaming run.

Great info, thanks!

You want an HXW if you want significant mono topshot length without dropping lb test to lose legit bottom fishing power.
The EX is a great reel, and with 80lb braid and 100-130lb mono topshot of about 15ft, it makes a great big bait reel for gags. You don’t want to hold it all day bottom fishing after holding an HX though. That is not to say that the EX is heavy- it is a very light reel for what it is.
If you can afford the raptor HX or HXW, then get them. The extra drag power and smoothness are worth it. You can get them in non raptor and single speed configuration for pretty cheap though. The 4.2:1 is a good ratio for moving heavy jigs and reeling in fish. I use the two speed raptors and I always have them in low gear (2:1) unless I’m jigging or bringing in empty bait. On the troll, the 5:1 high gear is fine.
Many people are averse to trolling with braid. You have to respect it more. It is less forgiving. It does fine in clips and on a planer rod. You just cannot have slack or twist going on or you will have unclearable problems. You also have to be more careful with young or newbie anglers as drags scream and braid is flying by their hands. The shock absorption you need comes from you topshot and/or wind-on.
