Have been using mullet, wondered if there is a better option.
menhaden, mullet, chicken necks, leftover fish guts…most anything will work and the longer it stays together the better it will work…you crabbing for bait or to eat D?

Nothing works better than FRESH menhaden. After the bait sours, the catch ratio goes down. Even crabbers use the freshest bait available. Herring runs a close second as both are very oily and draw crbs in from down current.

sellsfish, you got that stuff down to a science huh ?? I have a small trap and seems they just climb out of it so I never use it …
Bragging may not bring happiness,

goes home through the alley.

Chicken parts always works for me, and contrary to a few posts above, the more nasty and rotten the better. I dont know if the stench just travels better in the water or what.
Carl; just trying to add some for bait.
Thanks everyone for the input.
MB, If bait for a crab trap worked better rotten, then crabbers would not empty the old bait out of the bait well. Or for that matter, they would let the bait get putrid before using it. WRONG!!! Fresh bait works the best. True a crab will eat anything but fresh bait will always catch more crabs.
Hurricane, your funnels may be angled wrong or bent, bring the trap by and I will straighten them for you.

I am not arguing with any professional crabber on his/her preferance of bait. I simply stated that in my experience I have had more luck with rotten chicken. Fresh may work better for you and anyone else, which is fine. just said that I personally have fared better with the nasty stuff.
Sellsfish is dead on… I have put traps out side by side and run tests numerous times. Fresh wins every time. I change bait every day.

Sells could you post a picture of what those tunnels should look like.
Next time out I guess I will go with fresh bait haha
The best bait I used when in VA was eels. They outproduced chicken, spot, croakers, menhaden and herring in side by side traps off a dock in a creek.
The worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work
shad, hands down
