Been more than a month since I’ve been out. Pulling boards and down rods tomorrow. Best bite ramp 4 to Blacks or front blacks and up river? Or has anyone seen the bite shown up in crystal lake?
The first area you mention has been red hot. As for Crystal, we’ve been checking periodically but have not found much worth our time. I’m going out for a little while tomorrow whenever I decide to get up, have some breakfast and get hooked up. I’m not setting an alarm though. Just going out with spoons, bucktails, and swimbaits. I kept the 8 we boxed during Saturday’s tournament, fried 4 tonight, and put the rest up for bacon wraps later; so meat hunting is not necessary. I’m just looking to try some different techniques.
I found myself not wanting to keep any fish anymore, especially if it’s a bigger fish. However I’m taking my son, my dad and his friend tomorrow. I’ve been given some knowledge from a good buddy on here hoping the fish show up. James, I’ll send you a PM with my number. You can text or call whenever you get up and moving and I’ll let you know how it looks where we are.
You get my message James? I was texting David earlier today. He said he had Gizzards and was going Herring hunting tonight. I’ve text him a couple times but no response. I’m hoping I get one by the morning so I know whether I need to spend a fortune @ JC’s or if David will have Herring. I know people love Gizzards. I fished them ones and they didn’t seem lively, acted dead for 1-2 min when they first went into the water and didn’t really get much action. Maybe pulling them .6-.8 is too fast? I’ve fought the Powerdrive V2 steering by hand with the foot pedal, especially in the wind so maybe having the iPilot now will change things as well.
Best bight is covering water #128521;. As far as the gizzards you might have a overcrowding issue with your tank I can’t remember what size of tank or model you have but if you don’t have good filtration for gizzards or if you overcrowd that could be your problem. I know most guys on here run 2 tanks l. One for herring and one for shad. I don’t have the room really to run two tanks so I don’t worry about that. I have yet to have a problem running both in my 40 vest but I don’t overcrowd my tank when I have both eather and most of the time the bait I’ve got have been purged for awhile. But if I had the room I would run two tanks because it is better to keep them seperated
I always mix Herring and shad in the cooler months. We had 4 to 5 dozen shad of various sizes and 3 dozen Herring in my 30 gal Vest last weekend. No issue at all. Bait was not the reason we could not catch larger fish!
A lot of times your shad will look lethargic when they hit the water due to temp difference but they will perk up after being in the water a few minutes.
The shad don’t hit the water running in circles like the herring, but they work. I’ve always done better with herring but I know a lot of people that say the opposite. If you launch out of #4 check out the mouth of Hawlee Creek. It is a very hit or miss spot, but when it’s hit I did well this time of year. If they are there you will see them on the FF, if you aren’t marking don’t bother. The bank downstream from there is productive too. Just pull the along that bank over the points down to across from spinners, cross over to the mouth of spinners cove and pull that bank upstream past the esso sign. Try to cover a lot of water, if you hit a hot spot/point circle back until they leave. Big circles in Hollow creek where it runs into the little Saluda is great too, but gets a lot of pressure.
9 hours later the only fish in the boat are the bait and the 1 Striper fogman brought by and gave to us. We just can’t find them. Above Big mans was full of bait no Striper. Above Blacks bait but no Striper. Acapulco the screen is dead. Got another hour before we head in hoping and praying for one to get that skunk smell off. We’ve been slammed a few times but keep becoming unhooked.
Mike, Nice meeting you too. I fish the general area where you saw us today pretty often. Generally don’t go more than a couple of miles up or down the lake from there. If I’m by myself you’ll probably see some crazy guy fishing two spoon rods at the same time. You’d be amazed how often I can get doubles like that! Sent you another PM.
Spoon and I did pretty good today jerking the metal. 84 perch, a 24-25 inch striper, and several 18-21 inch stripers. We didn’t mess with live bait today. All fish were caught 30-40 feet deep around the Elbow.
We fished this morning as well and just ended up with a long, cold, boat ride. Marked lots of fish but could not get any to bite. Going out again in the morning, hope to have some better luck.
