Yes, today was the best day I have ever had on the flats catching reds on the fly!
And it was a great day! This year, I’ve only been able to go out on short trips like today or during my lunch break, because on June 8th this year my wife gave birth to our 2nd and 3rd…twin boys…so I’ve been busy else where :)…love my kids!
But when I do get a small break to hit the water…I take it!, and a day like today couldn’t have been more perfect!
High tide today was around 5pm, I got off work at 4:20pm and have to pick up my oldest from day care before 6pm…hmm…LETS GO!
Drove to a flat about 5 mins from my office. As soon as I pulled up, HOLY COW…tails everywhere! Can’t even lie when I say you could see about 10 tails up at one time, when those went down, about another 5 pop up!..it was awesome!
I head out (and this is where I feel like a pro)…cast out to the first fish, one cast, bout 10 small strips/twitches…wham!..fish on!, fairly easy fight (as I look all around at like 10 other fish)…land fish, quick measure…bout 27"…release (fish 1).
Walk bout 20 yards (still a pro)…cast out, holy carp…he took fly as soon as it hit the water, which I though for sure I was gonna spook him being soo close. Much stronger fish, longer fight…pull up, way over slot, no measure, release to go chase other fish! (fish 2)
Turn around, walk about 10 yards (so awesome)…(and again, still pro status)…cast out, over shot him, pull back, re-cast, strip bout 10 times, fish on!..quick fight, again over slot, I’m not even measuring or trying to take pictures, I just wanna catch more fish!..release (fish 3)
I just cleared that area, so I walk to other side of this flat, walk up on another pod and here is where I suck. Cast out, over shoot it, line lands on fish’s back…((). Turn around, try to cast to other fish, (() fly is snagged on grass…get un-snagged…fish disappeared. See another one, cast to fish, start stripping, end up jerking fly in front of fish, bye bye fish. (**() it, now I
