Best Day of Shrimping In My Life

Swansea says ya’ll want a report, so here you go.

Wednesday - woke up early to shrimp outgoing tide. Boat hooked up, got nets, cooler, was going to grab one more thing but got distracted by my K-9. He was itching to go. I wasn’t planning on taking him but felt guilty, so got his leash & water bowl, and off we went.

Launched boat at Buck Hall, headed to just north of McClellanville.

Once I get there and unstrap my poles, I notice that I forgot one key component - BAIT. Never in my life have I done such a thing. I was livid. Flew back at 5600 rpm’s to Buck Hall, pulled boat out of water and headed back home, thinking my season was over (not knowing if I would have a chance to go again).

Went to work for a couple hours, kept checking forecast - this would be the best day left to go shrimping this season… Irritated and in a foul mood, not wanting to shrimp incoming tide, I finally decide to go for it.

Headed back to Buck Hall, launched boat around 4:00, make it to my destination around 4:35 and set my poles up fairly deep (6-9 ft of water).

Threw first cast just short of 5, thinking I’ll be lucky to cover the bottom of the cooler, wrong tide, wrong location…

1st cast

SWEET!!!

And - it got better… Second, third, every cast beyond filled with shrimp. I have never seen anything like it in my life, consistently, with some casts over quarter cooler. YAY!!! Most often times, the net was so heavy due to the shear weight of all of the shrimp, I had to go to the stern of the boat to get it over the gunnel, no joke. It was easier to throw a 10 ft net than it was to lift it over the gunnel.

Coolered out in just over one pass (1.3) by myself. It was beyond epic, the absolute best day of shrimping in my life! I can only hop

Very nice. I have been shrimping since the late 70’s and have only had days like you just had 3 times. Sure is fun when it happens. And most will not believe it happened. But if you shrimp long enough, it will happen. Great report!!

Retired - always broke – but better than working!!!

Heather ,
I stopped shrimping about 4-5 yrs ago due to back issues, but still love to read reports such as yours. Brings back memories - such as when
I forgot the net one trip!

Great shrimp baiting season summary. That would be epic for anyone.

Awesome report.

Awesome report.

Lady Shrimpkilla, I notice you’re not one-poling. How do you manage to drive AND throw alone?

Great report. Love the pictures!

Wait for it…

The tide and the wind are your friend. When you set poles, take into consideration both, you want them to take you down the line, but also consider how the weight of your net will reposition the boat.

I drift when setting, but right before I put in the next pole I throttle forward to compensate for how pulling in the net on the previous pole will effect my position. Sounds harder than it is.

Best tip I ever got about shrimping - don’t over think it. I am probably over thinking it by the above explanation, lol. Honestly I don’t think about how, I just do it. It works or it doesn’t - and if it doesn’t, I change whatever isn’t working, and then it works. Trial & error my friend.</font id=“maroon”></font id=“Georgia”>
