After my dad’s ethanol trouble in the marquesas last year, I think one needs to be on board this year. Luckily he was able to text me and get me to call seatow, but it barely worked.
Who makes the best most powerful unit?

I had one of these and liked it. Let it go with the boat I sold last year. Ending up getting a Midland this year for backup and was not impressed with the quality.

I think the SMRs like this one have the best performance and range but don’t hold up long to the salt water enviroment. At least mine didn’t. Also, the channel dial is on top and hard to dial in with one hand.
If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.
My Icom got a response from CG Key West from Tavernier reef just when I needed it. I was impressed to hear them answer, “this is Coast Guard Key West, please state your emergency and location.” I was standing on the hardtop though.
quote:hmm. Thats pretty good there! I have a poling platform but thats as high as I will be getting. Never had one on the flats boat before but bobbing up and down broke down in boca grande channel with approaching afternoon storms aint too cool in a 16ft skiff.

Thanks guys.
I have the 6Watt Li ion Icom which I would highly recommend will hold charge with use for days on end has great signal a range seems good when I have tested it. The only downside is it wasn’t cheap but it is the only radio on my boat so…if I need it it will be worth the $200

two votes for Icom. I think that will be it!
quote:I have 2 of the m72s,which are what you are describing.Very good range and submersible for up to 30min at 1 fathom I believe.I will use them until something substantially better is on the market.

I second the M-72…I knocked mine off the dock at Ripley light at it stayed in 6’ for about 15 minutes… when i finally got it out…it still was scanning and working fine…rinsed it off and used the AquaQuake function to clear the speaker…it gave me no troubles after that…I would look into Icom’s new M36…they took the best of the m72 with its range and combined it with the floating capibilities of the M34…
U’ll have that on them big jobs
definately go icom, i love my m72 as well. buy 25’ of cable and the connector and your push pole or paddle can boost range. plus at 6watts, i think its still the strongest.
scuba steve’s had it at 187.50

fwiw, west marine will do online price matching. i just picked up the uniden atlantis 250 for around $71. just a heads up to the penny pinchers out there.
I like standard handhelds as well they are tough as nails and take the beatings we put on them on the boats.
