Came back to say I just watched the video. I was impressed w/ the Coleman… Gonna go crawl into a hole now.

"Kiss my ass, I bought a boat; I’m goin’ out to sea." (Jimmy Buffett covering Lovett)
Get the Yeti. It will be last cooler you buy due it’s durability. Not everyone needs ice for a week, but it will do it if you want. I pack my 65 Quart with 50 lbs every Friday and will have a cold cooler until Wednesday or Thursday depending on how often we open it.
“Get a Yeti, never look back. I’m sure you piss away $350/mo in stupid bull**** most of the time. Might was well get your money’s worth this month! :)”
When I piss away $350 in a month, it’s a lot more fun than buying a cooler.
A 50qt. wheeled Extreme 5 day cooler delivered to your door for $30 plus tax.
This conversation is no different than buying a top tier v. bottom tier boat. You always get what you pay for. I for one am thinking about getting one of the 20 qt. (portable) Yeti coolers because I am sick of buying 1-2 travel coolers a year at $30-$40 that leak, break, and don’t hold ice. I am yet to find a 20 qt. cooler worth a flip. I keep a big cooler on the boat but 90% of the time I find myself loading up a smaller cooler because it is easier to carry.
I would love to have a large Yeti on my boat but having it stolen would be a big concern. I keep my boat at a marina and they don’t typically steal expensive stuff, but coolers and minnow buckets have a way of disappearing. Probably would be less inclined to steal a Yeti b/c most know how expensive they are, but I don’t want to find out the hard way.
I have Yeti coolers and they are ok. They definitely do not live up to all the hype out there. I wanted to believe in them when I first dropped $300 on a 45qt cooler, but it just didn’t prove itself. Whether in the boat or the Land Cruiser, it simply does not hold ice “for days” like everyone says they do. Just doesn’t happen. It is tough and handles abuse, and the suction that it produces is fantastic… but the do all end all it is not. Buy a nice Coleman Xtreme, save some money and you will be more than happy.
needing my beer to stay cold for 5 days well… that I don’t seem to have a need for.
I hear ya on that one!
no doubt the high end coolers are very nice and rugged as hell, but I went the Coleman route too and have been satisfied for what I use them for: weekend camping or simple day trips…
I have had a 50 quart Yeti for a year now (Father’s Day 2010)…If you put cold drinks in it, ice on the drinks and keep it closed, you can count on a few days even in the recent heat.
However, a typical day on my boat it gets opened between 10 and 40 times…I have noticed this greatly reduces the length of time the ice lasts.
No question it is better then the cheaper coolers and will out last them by at least 4 times and probably more. If you are going to use the cooler on multiple days in a row then I would vote for the Yeti, if you are going to use it one day a week, it really does not matter, IMO.
Do not drain the cold water until you are ready to add more ice…
Make sure the items are cold to start with…warm drinks will melt the ice regardless of the type of cooler.
Use freezer packs or block ice between uses to keep the items cold…

amen…this is rule #1 for packing my coolers…
EDIT: side story to go along with all this cooler talk…my wife praised my cooler packing skills recently when she and a few friends decided to go to the beach…she said PB (pre-Bonzo) she would just throw stuff in there haphazardly and now she actually thinks it through and packs it properly (and pre-cools the items) and is amazed how accessible the stuff is and how much more she can fit in the cooler…I know it’s not like getting Dad Of The Year or anything, but I did shed a little tear…
Hey, anytime you can get a woman to state publicly that a man actually did something right or well is cause for celebration. Maybe not Dad of the Year material but definitely a Bud-Lite Man Moment.
I agree that the any cooler you open 20 times will not hold ice very well. I have three igloo extremes with busted lids and broken handles. The yetis are pretty much bulletproof, and they dont slide. That is a good and bad thing. My 105 packed full of ice and a quartered deer requires a crane to get it out of the back of my truck.
A trick used by Guides on long extened trips to keep ice , use a wet white towel to cover the cooler, no matter the quality level of cooler you have it keeps longer. Especially when you are in the sun. Same goes for the top of your boat fish lockers.
