Best Knot for Braid

Yes, I know, this has probably been asked and answered but, I can’t get the search feature to work. I bought a new reel last week and have finally ventured into the world of braided line. Never having used it, what is the best knot to use when attaching lures, hooks, etc.? Any pitfalls or hints that might help me out?

Thanks

I use a palomar or uni knot. With the uni I add more wraps than with mono though.

Oh and be sure to back that spool with mono or tape to give the braid traction.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I was taught to use a leader of mono from the braid to the lure. The mono or flouro gives the line some stretch ability plus make the line immediately in front of the lure less visible. Tie a 2" loop in the braid with a surgeons knot. Run the mono through the loop and wrap 1-12 times and then pull the tail back through the end of the loop the way the main line comes in. Moisten and pull it tight. This puts a double line at the cutting edge of the braid and is very strong. Hairball showed me that and I have used it ever since with excellent results. And what Saltydog says about the mono or tape x2. Braid is slick stuff and will have a hard time “gripping” the spool.

if at all possible use a palomar. and the backing on the reel. if using a uni have many wraps. and try a “triple surgeons knot” with doubled up braid. i havent tested that one.

So you should not tie your rig, lure, etc, directly to the braid?

Certain types of fishing you could but it is best to use some kind of a leader when making presentations to certain types of fish. If its a simple line to jig for “dumb” fish the palomar is hard to beat. The triple sergeons knot is a quick one to tie in a double line, I like a bimini better but its harder to tie. My rule is to double the wraps I normally would make with a mono knot (just my opinion, haven’t had on fail since do it this way but I got to fish like none this year). You can also use an Albright, just make sure the floro is the doubled back portion.

Oh, and make sure that you put that braid on with tension, get it on there tight or it will sink into the spool and cause a very undesirable situation. Wide crosses to begin with.

What kind of braid did you go with?..Answer: Power Pro.

uni-knot works great for joining braid to floro or mono leaders. i’ve caught fish without a leader but seem to do better with it. i love braid for trout fishing. that little “tick” trout do when they hit a grub feel’s 100 times stronger with braid.

I really appreciate all the input. I did go with Power pro and it was put on by the guy at Bass pro shop so it should be wound tight enough. Last question, and I apologize if it is stupid but, the mono leader…should it be the same lb. test as the braided line?

for trout i use 15 lb. braid and 12 lb. floro. for bass i use 20 lb. braid and 15 floro.

For jigging I use 80lb braid and 80 to 100lb floro. I think it depends on what type of fishing you are doing.

Inshore, flounder, trout whatever I can get to bite. Believe me, when you fish like I do you don’t get picky. It would appear that your mono leader should be a little lighter than your braid, is that correct?

Double Palomar…

Excuses? I’ve heard them all!

i try to get away with as light a leader as i can, same with braid. but set the drag to whatever is the lightest test.
