Best Map

I have a Lake Murray, Kingfisher map from WallyWorld & just now, for some reason, I realized that it doesn’t have the detail my GPS has. Is there a better map out there?

Bob, can’t imagine there being a paper map with anywhere near the detail on your Navionics chip. It would have to be HUGE to show that kind of granularity and still be legible.

just curious what you want to look at that you can’t just use your gps?

Bob. Download the navionics app on your tablet or there is a link someone on here posted that will get you to it on your pc. I have it downloaded on my work pc so dont know the link but im for sure one of the guys on here posted it a while back. I use my tablet while fishing. Like having a 10" screen gps. Dont even use a chip in my lowrance. Its used exclusively as a sonar. And i think i have maybe $20 in the app with upgrades

I was just was wanting a good map I could look at, write notes on when I’m out in my shop messing around. No computer in there and I don’t even know how to turn my wife’s Kindle on. Plus I don’t think she wants it in my shop. I’ve got the Navionics pc app on our home computer, but I can’t write on that, and I can’t print screen shots from it. The map I have doesn’t seem to be as detailed as the one I bought a few yrs. ago. There were humps, etc. that are not on the new maps.
Thanks anyways.

Fishhunt is the one I use. Always keep a paper in the boat. Batteries for gps or phone aren’t 100% reliable in a pinch.

“I may be going to hell in a bucket. But at least I’m enjoying the ride”

You could always pick up an extra power cable for your unit and put alligator clips on it. Get a small 12v battery and scout new spots from your living room. Of course, you can’t write notes, but just put the cross hairs on spots you think look good to you and mark them. That way you can go fish an area you are unfamiliar with and go straight to some likely spots without wasting time on the lake looking.

It’s a good feeling when you get on a spot loaded with fish that you were able to pick out by looking at the map.

I thought about doing just that. Maybe not from the living room (at least not when the wife’s home).

This won’t help with your paper map issue. But I have a rig like Striperskiff suggested. I bought an extra mounting bracket and power cord for my Garmin 740S. I mounted the bracket to a small piece of plywood and ran a long wire to a battery with charger outside on my back deck. I placed the 740 right beside my laptop where I can have the GPS and Google Earth side by side. I then scout for likely fishing spots on GE, and enter the coordinates in a waypoint on the GPS. My GPS allows a short note to be attached to a waypoint.

This allows me to avoid cutting grass, paying bills, etc. And, I have used up almost all the waypoints on my GPS. Great for mid-winter when the weather is too snotty to fish!

It’s never too snotty. a high of 45-55 with a small constant drizzle in the middle of dec, jan, or Feb is what I live for…the big girls come out to play.

Also, I think mytopo.com has free online maps. You can order detailed maps to your specifications from them.

I just went on mytopo to fact check, and I cannot find underwater topography on any of their maps. Sorry.

Does anyone have an extra Lowrance (blue connector) power cable laying around, that they want to part with??

I have my whole old unit, power cable and GPS antenna if you want them. I think its the same one you have now, and I don’t need it.

Thanks a bunch! I appreciate it. If it’s the blue connecter, it should work for me. Give me a shout & we’ll figure out a meeting.
