I pulled my boat trailer axle to replace rusted springs and found some serious rust damage to the axle. I am considering replacing the axle or finding a really good welder with axle repair experience to fix it.
I would appreciate any recommendations for boat trailer axle sales or repair shops in the Beaufort or Charleston areas. I am in Hampton.
I am taking the wife to the doctor in Charleston Wednesday. If I get a good recommendation, I might load the axle in her minivan and take it to a shop in Charleston.
You could always check out Northern Tool on Rivers Ave in North Charleston. They have a good selection of trailer parts including axles with and without hub assembly already attached. That’s where I go for trailer parts.
Thanks everyone! I too am frugal, and not by choice! But, I’m not ready to give up the salt just yet. Yes, I need a galvanized axle. I memory serves, Northern just has black axles.
I have a local repair shop owner looking to see what he can find. I will try Sturdy Built. I gotta do something soon, because night shrimping is just around the corner.
Thanks all again. As usual, ya’ll provide good information mixed with entertainment!
I’m looking as well, I have an older Wesco trailer. I’ve checked on line as well as a couple locals. Best price so far is from Wesco. You may want to contact the manufacturer for your trailer, at least you’ll know the parts are the correct ones for the trailer.
Go straight to wesco, I’ve bought a pile of trailer parts from them this year for various projects and helping friends out and they’re prices on parts are unbeatable in my opinion and the service has been top notch.
I got the axle loaded in my wife’s minivan with great difficulty. She threatened a slow, painful death if I got grease on her Honda! I don’t want to miss shrimping season, so I put down tons of cardboard and plastic!
I called Charleston Trailer and will visit them this afternoon after wifey’s doctor appointment. Lady there said (understandably) no guarantee of fit unless I bring the axle to them.
I have the other options mentioned here in mind if for some reason CT can’t help me.
I get my replacement galvanized axles from wesco but I live in the upstate. I would give Charleston trailer a try. Then wesco. Wesco is in Cayce so not that far from Charleston
I had a similar problem that “Spec” has. I took my axle with the springs still attached to Charleston trailer and they made a axle to length and welded two spring pads which made the axle and spring installation really easy. The turnaround time was really fast for me, I dropped it off early and got it back late that day. I looked at northern tool but they didn’t have axles that would fit under my trailer. I would go to them for the axles and northern tool for other parts such as rollers or bunk brackets.
I dropped my axle off at Charleston Trailer yesterday afternoon. Good folks there. They are building me a new axle. It will be ready Friday, but it will probably be next week before I can get back to Charleston. Thanks for all the advice!
