Best rod action for sheepshead

I usually fish a 7’ medium action rod. When fishing for sheepshead, do I need to be looking at a medium light action? Just concerned about the backbone when fighting a bigger fish.

Thanks

I use 7’ shimano terramar. Very light tip to feel the bite and enough backbone to land them.

I’m not a sheep expert by any means…but I’d go for a popping rod. Fast action…light tip & big backbone.

It is kind of like archerey. Meaning: different strokes for different folks. The one that works best for you will be the perfect set up for you–trial and error. However and in general, you will need something sensitve that has plenty of backbone. Those big sheeps can test your tackle. I like a 7’ heavy action casting rod with a limber tip and my Revo Inshore Abu Garcia for sheeps. The Revo has about 24lbs of drag to get em out of the rocks or other structure. I’m going to try one of the Abu Garcia Volatile Inshore rods when I get back, and I’ll let you know how it holds up and performs. Only 8 more days till I’m paroled off of Okitraz (Okinawa, Japan). This place feels like being in jail to me (ha,ha).

I use med/heavy 6 and half foot with a calcutta 400

I’d listen to Waller. He flat out puts sheepshead in the boat…
