best time of year for surf fishing at Capers?

plan on taking the kids out there camping for a couple days this Spring…well I guess its more like Summer already. I’ve heard of guys surf fishing the beach out there for big bull reds at night. What time of year is best? any pointers would be great

May usually seems to be a good time. That sandbar on the North end is a good spot.

April and May can both be good. In regards to the sandbar on the north end.Do you fish from the surf or from a boat ?
I go up that way pretty often. I have fished the surf at the boneyard on the southern end with good success, but never the north. Appreciate any input.

I’ve had more luck from shore. That sandbar seems to move around a lot and is never the same. You can usually walk to she sandbar at low tide from Capers, but its easy to get stranded and end up swimming back to the island. I usually park the boat on the sandbar and then fish from the surf with fresh cut mullet. Many times the drum seem to be right in the breakers in only a foot or two of water. Sometimes there is a little cut inbetween Capers and the sandbar that holds fish as well.

When the Azalea’s are in full bloom…as in right now. Rising water temp’s coax offshore brood stock to move into the surf to feed up after winter’s grip on the coast. Fresh cut mullet and blue fish filets( greasy smelly when fresh) are natural protein source, and readily avialable. I’ve got a theory that the big bull reds follow the blue fish in the surf to feed on the scraps they leave as they slash and chop their toothy way through the bait. Catch a blue fish and expect the spotails to be right behind them. Birds diving into the surf are excellent indicators of approaching schools of fish. Great time to get out and try it, but keep a weather eye peeled for fast popping thunderstorms…they can move up and down the beach with amazing speed and powerful gale force winds and hail.

awesome. I may try it in another week or so as with the recent weather I would imagine the fish may show up a bit early.

Thanks. I have a few days off the first week of April and am looking forward to at least a couple of trips then. I used to use fish finder rigs in ths surf for big drum on the south end. Do you prefer those or a large egg sinker with swivel over a short leader tied to the hook ? I guess you’d call it a surf Carolina rig.
