I’ve never fished the surf before but want to give it a try. Any advice from experienced anglers regarding which tides might give me the best chance to catch some trout and/or a red would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips.
Generally, regarding tides, I prefer a rising tide. But I find early morning, regardless of the tide (other than slack tide) to be most important.

Incoming for me as well. Low tide at dark thirty in the morning, first 4 hours as the sun rises is perfect. As far as the species in the surf right now, I have not hooked a trout or red since mid May or so. Whiting, blues, sharks and rays are all I have caught since. The occasional spot, croaker, lady fish and yearling red has turned up. The reds should start to spawn here in the next 4-6 weeks, odds will be better of hooking one then, ( from the beach ).

Rising tide has always worked the best for me. When you get to the beach at low tide, you can see any holes or places that might hold fish as the tide rises.
