Need to get a new trolling motor. I prefer Minn Kota and I definitely would like to move up to the remote anchor model. So between the Ulterra and its self deploy which sounds awesome for my back does anyone have any opinions that might help me decide? Does the GPS work by connecting it to my fish finder/chart?
Best advice is to call or better yet go over to Charleston Marine and talk to the guys there. They are an official MinnKota dealer and repair center. They can advise you on what would be best for your boat. I did that with my Sportsman 207. They will be straight up with you and not try to up-sell you. I had them do everything, including mounting the quick release, batteries and charger. They did a super professional job. Couldn’t be more pleased with it. Reasonable price too. I chose the Terrova only because my back is still okay, and its more reliable than the Ulterra. Really the deploy on mine is almost effortless and not hard on the back whatsoever.

I’m looking at the Rhodans. It’s a 120lb vs 112lb. I could not tell you if that extra 8lb of thrust is worth the difference.

I have a 23’ bay boat. I went with the Ulterra 112#, I have no regrets. I was told with a 22’ bay boat, you can use a 80#, but I wouldn’t. It is the same reasoning a salesman tries to put you in an under-powered boat… to keep you in a price range that looks good, but on the water it would suck. I think there is about a $350 difference between the 112 and 80#, including the extra battery. With the Ulterra, I have only used an anchor once while fishing.
As far as hooking up to your fishfinder/computer, I think the “I-Pilot Link” only connects with the Hummingbird. The “I-Pilot GPS” (what I have) is a stand alone unit, no communications with my SIMRAD.
I cannot speak for the Rhodan, but I hear it is a good unit.
I swapped over to the ultrra about six months ago. I love it. It’s so much more convenient. Nothing wrong with my other motor I’m just lazy. For the ipilot link. I don’t see much purpose in it. Anchor lock also great. I have not deployed my anchor in years.
I hear what your saying about the 112 Butter. I guess what I need to figure out is how to add another battery. Right now there are four with 2 for the trolling motor
Definitely go with the 112lb thrust. I have a 22’ Bay boat with that and it works great. I also went with the 3 bank Minn Kota charger also. I have 5 batteries; 3 for trolling, 2 for starting. Another one saying, “I never use an actual anchor anymore”.
you will only need 4 batteries to have a 36 volt system.
3 for the trolling motor, and 1 for the boat. we can use one of the trolling motor batteries as your emergency start battery.
if the bay boat has a t-top i would strongly suggest the 36 volt.
if no top, then the 24 volt will be okay, but its still gonna be a bit under powered.
Give us a call and we will be happy to discuss it with you.
Optiker, thank you for the kind words, and I am glad we met your expectations.
Or you could go Lithium for the Trolling motor.
Many bass tx guys fish 3x50ah and say it’s enough for a full tournament day.
3x 100ah if your running it wide open the whole day.
battleborn are less expensive than other brands but lithiums are still crazy expensive.
They generally are smaller and some can fit 2 in a group 31 spot.
