Getting ready for cold weather trout fishing this winter.
Was wondering what is the go to plastic to put on a jig head and what size jig head would you recommend.

You’ll probably get a myriad of answers ranging from Trout Tricks to every color imaginable of small swimbaits or shrimp imitations.
They’ll all work, but if you want to keep it simple…throw a 3" or 4" smoke metalflake curly tail grub on a 1/4 oz jighead with a good hook on it. The standby red headed jighead with the crappy saltwater hook will work, I just like using jighead with needle sharp hooks…personal preference.
That one grub will catch fish under most conditions.
well first ya gotta have a minn-kota riptide ulterra troll motor. just kidding.
3 or 4" Curl Tail grub.
Dark greens, smoke, xmas tree, Gold, Copper colors.
Check out overstockbait.com much better pricing than retail if you can find the color you want.
Gamakatsu Round 3/16 - 3/0 jig head. This jighead works on just about anything and is one of the toughest sharpest hooks I have found.

Original Trout Tricks, same jighead.
As light of a fluorocarbon leader as you can get away with. 20lb in the summer, 12lb in the winter. Water is clearer in the winter and they can get pretty picky.
All above are good suggestions on the grubs, but I think you have to have a shrimp imitation rigged up too. I’ve done really well the past couple of years drifting a Voodoo shrimp along the grass. The bigger trout like this subtle approach. Generally the softer the hit, the larger the fish.
Voodoo shrimp on one rod and a Z-man Paddle Z electric chicken with 1/8 or 1/4 jighead (a good one) on another and I’m ready to leave the dock.
Right now I’ve been having good success with trout tricks and slim swims in the purple color.
Zoom smokin shad
I like a smaller bait during the winter.
When you say winter, I don’t think we’ve reached winter time feeding patterns yet. Deeper water over 6 ft.
Right now you can probably catch a trout with any bait I have on the shelf.
December 4th last year we caught a ton of fish on the Pearl Blue Glimmer MinnowZ paired up with a TroutEye Jig, also a Shrimp Po Boy TroutTrick with a TroutEye.

My go-to in really cold water (as others have said, we are not there yet) is the 3.75" StreakZ in Ralphs Shad color, on a 1/8 oz TE jig. I also like a Pearl MinnowZ in cold water on 3/16 or 1/4 head.

I agree with the pearl blue glimmer minnowz on a trouteye jig. I also always keep a chartreuse silverflake curly grub with a chartruese jigheads rrigged all winter as well. We call it the “Green Goblin”. It’s sort of a family heirloom for us. I’ve caught every species with it. Not fancy but my Dad’s been using it since the 80’s with sucess.
