Better late than never

Picked up the crew(or should I say woke the crew up at 5:15) to head out. We were entered in the JIYC tournament so we were going to try and get in about 120’ and snag a dolphin and hopefully a king. We were aboard the “Skirt Dropper”, I know I gave the owner hell about the name as well. Round up some live bait and start heading out. About 6 miles out one of the three crew starts feeling bad, so we head towards some live bottom in 40’ abandoning the hope of a dolphin. We troll for about 45 minutes and the ill crew member can’t take any more. After a long wet ride back we surf through Dewees at low tide and drop off the ill one at about 10:00. My $250 entry fee and calcutta is quickly going down the toilet. We leave IOP marina down the ditch and back out the jetties hoping to make it the Charleston 60. Well the ocean had different plans. We stop about mile past the jetties and drop lines in the channel. We had pretty much given up hope when one of the rods fired off. A fire drill to clear lines and were off chasing the fish. He got a good bit of the line off the TLD 15 before we were able to get him under control. After the days events I am sure its a shark, but when the fish surfaces its a nice king to our surprise. One shot with the gaff and the fish is in the boat. Fish weighed 26.5 lbs and we took 1st in JIYC by .4 lbs. I guess now I’ll have to go by a ridculous size boat with 4 300’s to fish in the SKA. Thanks to Sam and Billy for an awesome adventure.

Congrats on the win.

You know most King tournaments I hear about, the winning fish is caught around the Jettys or in the shipping channell. Sounds like you deserved the win with all the BS you had to go through. What was the take if you don’t mind me asking?
