Its a bit late but i finally got my hands on some of the footage from a great trip we had up in Virginia Beach the year before last. If nothing else, hopefully it will be an entertaining way to kill some time on this rainy day. Hope to have a report for everyone soon! Keep up with our Facebook page for updates throughout the spring and summer.
Nice job of ripping lips, guts, etc. in order to qualify for a catch. Been there, done it, don’t agree with it…Even if it is in a tourney situation. At least try to get the hook out. I think that we owe it to the fish. I will probably get a backlash for this but, I just think that jerking the leader until it pops is an irresponsible way to claim you “caught” a white, sail, etc.
PS—Please don’t respond with “We don’t use SS hooks so they rust out quickly.” I think that is a cop out in order for us to make ourselves feel justified.
There were no guts, lips, etc… ripped. All fish were caught and released on circle hooks in the corner of the mouth. Yes, one of the fish threw up its stomach. Doesn’t mean he was gut hooked at all. Billfish do that all the time when hooked, they swallow it back and swim away to be caught again another day. Modern day circle hooks are made the way they are for the very reason of avoiding gut hooks and handling the fish as little as possible. Its responsible enough to be considered a “catch and release” by IGFA rules and regs.

Should have been never than late with comments like that.
Empty Pockets… F— O-- A-- D–
Should you want to discuss what that means,

Every tournament in the world that does catch and release, releases their fish the same way. Quit being a hater and get on board with
current release methods. The fish and your boat don’t get the crap beat out of them!!!

…Wow! Don’t you think that is a little harsh to wish personal harm and their eternal demise for someone who expresses one’s opinion on releasing fish (of all things)that may differ from some.

… It is not that big of a deal. It is just an opinion.

…Because something is the “accepted” way of doing things, does not mean that I have to like it. Like I said, I have been there and done it. I just don’t have to like it.
By the way I enjoy putting fish in the box just as much as anyone.
Have a great day.
More sailfish were hooked in the corner of the mouth using circle hooks (85 percent) as compared with J-hooks (27 percent). In addition, more sailfish were deep hooked in the throat and stomach with J-hooks (46 percent) as compared to with circle hooks (2 percent).
Empty, I personally think you responded to be confrontational. If so, I can oblige personally if you would like. If not, I sincerely apologize.
It seems we disagree on releases and that’s ok. You can rest assured We have not killed a billfish or floated one off. Out of hundreds caught, 0 billfish fatalities. Maybe our way has some merit.
All that matters though is I agree with the style of release considering it is my boat.
Posters like you are the reason we don’t share as much as we could on this site. I can only speak for me but there are plenty of guys fishing this town that don’t share much either. I wonder if it is due to the same reason?
Here is the deal. The last time billfishing in NC we were targeting whites on pretty light tackle and I think we caught 13 bills. some of those fish were released with the popping the line method which I just don’t agree with due to the potential hook snatch trauma and the possibility of leaving a long leader hanging from the mouth of the fish. I understand the whole concept of the release method, but I have seen way too many folks pop the leader intentionally…alot of times very far away from the hook. I also understand the “numbers game” and the rush to get baits back in the water, but I think that it is sometimes done irresponsibly without necessarily benefiting the fish as much as possible. Without billing a fish there is no chance of reviving by the boat. I have cut off my share of hooks that were hooked too deeply myself, but I always try to cut it as close to the hook as possible.
My comment was not an intentional jab at anyone personally, but a jab at what in my opinion is not always the best way to release a fish. I may be wrong, but it is my opinion.
Am I totally wrong in my thoughts…or do they have some merit?
Still not sure if I want to address the F.O.A.D. comment. I think I will refrain for now.
