Better or Worse?

upstateyakker, thank you for the apology. I wasn’t necessarily targeting you. The entire way the school system is structured is broken. Everyone learns a little different. College has it a little better, letting the student make more responsible decisions, or not. Why does everyone have to learn in the same way, same classroom, with the same people that do not want to learn? Why are we trying to have young kids sit for hours at a time when they could learn so much more in an active learning environment? I was very lucky, I went to private school, I had a teacher in the 6th grade that made me want to learn and I have been hungry for knowledge ever since. The school system seems to me to be training people to obey, not to learn. Not to learn how to learn. ← This is important. You can memorize things all your life, but if you understand how they work, you put it together like a puzzle and it is easier and more fun. You learn people will quickly judge you by your communication skills. Proper grammar is necessary. It was my hardest subject, but people, in general, will quickly dismiss someone that is hard to understand in text.
When you get out into the job market you will not be working with people that want to be your friend. Teacher’s are doing you a disservice by treating you this way.

I shouldn’t have lashed out like I did and I apologize to Joseph. I guess I took what he was saying the wrong way. My whole high school career I have had people think that just because I’m a good ol country boy and live on a farm that I’m unintelligent when I’m actually very intelligent (not people on here, at my school). I’m sorry I lashed out like I did and do apologize. I took my frustrations out on here and shouldn’t have.

Surely, you see the irony. Yes?

I’ve been working with “at risk” teens out of Miami for the past half year and their grammar and spelling ability as a whole is atrocious. We also do a few meetings with the families of these kids and, often times, their families have the same lack of understanding of proper English. It could be the broken school system, but if the parents cannot write correctly, how can they ensure their children are learning to do so?

People can blame the teachers and students all they want but the blame isn’t solely to be lain on them. I think the parents have a lot to do with the abilities of their kids to communicate properly.

This is 100% correct. You can say what you want about the teachers, but the reason kids can’t read, write or speak proper English is because of THEIR PARENTS or (lack thereof). Teachers used to simply reinforce what kids were taught at home. Until we get back to the mindset of parents being the primary teachers, things are gonna continue to get worse.
