Better or Worse?

If The Post and Courier ran the same story and got responses from students, would our schools look better or worse?

'Cause that’s pretty bad!

That’s just depressing. Were they hand-written? Had to be, because spell check would have caught most of that.

From the article:

“These kids should learn write from wrong.
Earlier this month, The Post exposed a scheme at Manhattan?s Murry Bergtraum HS for Business Careers in which failing students could get full credit without attending class, but instead watch video lessons and take tests online. One social-studies teacher had a roster of 475 students in all grades and subjects.
Red-faced administrators encouraged a student letter-writing campaign to attack The Post and defend its ?blended learning? program. Eighteen kids e-mailed to argue that their alma mater got a bad rap.
Almost every letter was filled with spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.”

It’s truly a shame that kids aren’t being taught to read, write or do math. The public schools are more concerned about making sure the kids feel good about themselves than they are about teaching.

The kids who wrote the letters mean well, and it’s admirable they took the time to do so. Ironically, though, they’re efforts prove the author right.

Holy run on sentence Batman!

The first people to be blamed is the parents. How can educators enforce anything in the classroom if there is no discipline or repercussions of poor behavior/grades at home?

Looks like the staff of Murry Bergtraum HS & the “blended learning” program should help them get a great chance of going on to college. Maybe even this one…

"I am currently a senior in high school. The teachers try too much to be the students friend, instead of their educator. Some of my favorite teachers have been my educator first, and friend second."

No offense, but clearly the entire educational system is broken.

To be fair that was way better than the emails in the article

I guess I just got accepted to Clemson and offered 20k from them for no reason? I have a 4.5 GPA and I am in the top 5% of my graduating class. I also take high school and college classes at the same time. I didn’t take offense to what you said, I am just stating my point that I am well educated and know what I am talking about.

I think the point upstateyakker was trying to make is niether the teachers nor the system are encouraged or allowed to hold students accountable any more. Anyway, congrats on your acceptance kid.

That is one point I am trying to make and also, with the second post, the student has to have to the want to because the teachers won’t push the students to do good. A lot of that goes back to the parents.

Joseph is a straight-shooter. I truly believe he was trying to assist you, not bust your ball$. You lashed out at him for proofing your poorly-written response when your poorly-written response was actually reinforcing the author’s point. You should be thanking him instead of trying to retaliate.

I shouldn’t have lashed out like I did and I apologize to Joseph. I guess I took what he was saying the wrong way. My whole high school career I have had people think that just because I’m a good ol country boy and live on a farm that I’m unintelligent when I’m actually very intelligent (not people on here, at my school). I’m sorry I lashed out like I did and do apologize. I took my frustrations out on here and shouldn’t have.

I think the problem is Ohio! It all stems from there and then they export it:wink:

PS; Just for you Hoof. N. Chas is really close to Ohio.

Try reading job applications from the local students…very sad

Surely, you see the irony. Yes?

I’ve been working with “at risk” teens out of Miami for the past half year and their grammar and spelling ability as a whole is atrocious. We also do a few meetings with the families of these kids and, often times, their families have the same lack of understanding of proper English. It could be the broken school system, but if the parents cannot write correctly, how can they ensure their children are learning to do so?

People can blame the teachers and students all they want but the blame isn’t solely to be lain on them. I think the parents have a lot to do with the abilities of their kids to communicate properly.
