Got buzzed really close late one night by DNR running w no lights in Beaufort…
DNR guys say they saw me on radar but still came within 30 feet of me Wide A Open…Had my boat lit up w shrimp lights but still got got ticket for no bow light on.
I posted the whole deal on CF.Com and won the popular opinion poll and went to court…
Wasted trip, paid ticket and left…Got a call from a relative who worked closely w DNR.He told me if I had a prob w DNR talk w them before I talk w the world.
In over 50 years on the water, I’ve never had what I consider a bad experience with DNR anywhere, I’ve dealt with them from NC to Texas. SC has some of the best IMO. Never seen one act like a d@ck, never got a ticket that I didn’t deserve, didn’t whine about it when I did. Had a few tickets in my time. Could have had a lot more if they really wanted to be d@cks, or if I did. They have my full respect and they are welcome to stop me any time they desire.

I’ve said all that needs to be said so this will be my final post on the subject. Anyway, please consider the following before you continue to shame/blame me:
In my original post I said I had returned home and read the safety handbook and saw where I was in violation the law (thereby admitting guilt). I also advised readers to obtain and read the hand book.
Though I didn’t say so in the original post, I was neither upset nor angry until I talked with folks at the ramp who said that 2 weeks previously they had been stopped for the same offense and were simply given a verbal warning (something DNR told me they couldn’t do but obviously could have).
At the same time I saw an illegal tuber that was within sight of the DNR boat but not pursued.
To recap, yes I was guilty.Yes I advised others to read hand book. And yes I was upset because I felt that the laws were being prosecuted in a selective manner. Who among you have not been the victim of singling out while others go unpunished. I’m not just talking about DNR. I’m sure it’s had to have happened to most of you whether it’s a traffic cop, kindergarden/high school teacher, parent, or some other authority figure. And if you’re honest with yourself I think you know how that makes you feel. That’s all I’m saying.
We understand Oak.
This was a good topic and I’m sure will help prevent an accident or ticket for somebody that read it. Good luck in court.

Next time ask them how fast their rig will run, when they ask you why tell them you thought about running for it…
That’s what I do,just sayin

Oh I’ll be the first to tell you that I’ll be ticked if I get a ticket from DNR or police…usually at the officer at first. And then after I have time to think about it and mull it over, I 99.9% of the time realize that I could have done something different to avoid it and it was actually all my fault in the first place. Like I said, life lesson buddy. We were stopped a few weeks ago by DNR and I didn’t have my fishing license on me. No big deal; the officer was nice and called it in and I received a warning. Just that warning bothered me at first, but I was the one in the wrong. The DNR officer wasn’t being a jerk; he was doing his job. Don’t let this thread discourage you from continuing to enjoy the water or CF.com. We are a great group of diverse individuals with increasingly diverse backgrounds that are all passionate about the waters surrounding the low country.
Good luck and I hope your wife is doing better; time on the water is truly good therapy for any illness.

If you were on Monticello, the signs are posted by SCE&G. That is not a DNR regulation, therefore they will not write tickets. The ticket will not hold up in court. I ask that question of a DNR at the landing when I saw the same as you. That was his response.

i can’t dedice if i wanna stab myself in the eye, take a hard right off the ravenel bridge, or put antifreeze in your orange juice. i could go either way.
i got dfreedom and crackerlarry on grouptext. they’re trying to talk me down, but i’m only getting madder

Before I can decide, what would you use to stab yourself in the eye? Rusty fork, knitting needle, chopstick, really pointy carrot…I gotta know.

I agree with you oakridge… more discretion could have been shown in your particular case, if things happened as you described.
DNR was out on the lake in full force this past Saturday… The only people who thought they were aggressive were the ones being stupid. We anchored away from the crowd and had DNR constantly passing by us, never had the first problem. When we decided we had enough, I anticipated getting checked so I had everything out and ready before we left. Sure enough, we were stopped, showed them what they wanted to see and were on out way seconds later. I for one appreciate the thankless job they and other LEO’s do…

Only time the DNR around here seem to get in over their head is when they get involved with the stupid fed laws. We had a bunch of tickets dropped last year when they tried to get us for not having permits that are needed for a charter boat. Her reasoning is that people just don’t fish themselves off of a sporty. They couldn’t indendtify some fish either. The bow thing has been discussed on this site ad nauseum.

Thanks for a great laugh!
And to the OP, suck it up buttercup, it’s just like with any other law-enforcement sometimes you get a ticket sometimes you get a warning. These guys don’t get paid **** to do their job and it is a tough job. From going out on the lakes in the middle of the winter to recover some idiot that overturned his johnboat in 30 knot winds, to recovering dead bodies of the people that jump off the Ravenel Bridge, it’s not all fun and games. Being a commercial fisherman we are checked over and over and over and I will tell you 99% of these guys are great guys and totally professional. you Should go to court, ask the officer or the judge for leniency and see where the chips fall. Good luck

Could not have said that better myself. Follow the law, be polite, say yes sir and no sir, you will never have a problem with them. Just like you won’t get speeding tickets if you don’t speed.

No, most people I do work for say thank you. Sellsfish gets a lot of thank yous. So does Happy Bob. If my job was thankless, I’d get another job.
