Beware DNR

I could do that.

Believe it or not, I have even been thanked for doing my job…not often but it has happened. Do a good job, provide a good service, treat people respectfully, etc. and you will likely be thanked at some point.

Not lucky enough to have been “knighted” into the DNR when I applied, but have been a cop for 25+ years in the upstate. I can tell you that with me, (and a lot of guys I work with), it is about attitude and honesty. I tend to reward honesty and detest lameness in the form of bogus excuses and accusations of any sort. I would say that 90% of the time if you are up front and honest, you will be much better off. Running off at the mouth is a no brainer… ticket. Trying to impress your buds with smart comments or by filming the stop for youtube later just makes things worse. Just own up to the brainfart and IF you don’t get a warning, come to court, dress appropriately and be humble before the court.

Stono, what happened to the Redskin avatar? PC police get you?

How often do people attempt to record a stop?

Go on youtube. You will find lots of them. I’ve seen it at least 3 times in the last year in person. It’s very common now with all the smart phones. Surprised you haven’t seen this being a “lawman”.

Why does anyone need to fear the law who doesn’t break the law:question: At least not much and only some little ones sometimes  In that case you just man up, plead guilty and take whatever comes. It’s always better if you don’t pizx off the LEO. Try not to pizx off the judge either.

I don’t think cast nets off the bow will get you into trouble. The DNR are reasonable folks.

There is a growing perception that law enforcement is more about revenue collection than “To Serve and Protect”. It’s frustrating for people to keep up with all of the myriad of regulations, licenses, catch limits, etc. The fact that ignorance of the law is no excuse is of little comfort when you get a ticket for a life jacket infraction that is $100 more than your power bill for the Month of July. A $50.00 ticket would serve the same purpose of enforcing a safety code without bending some poor tax payer over the proverbial barrel. Pulling someone over because they crossed over the “fog line”, sticking their face in the car to “smell” for evidence, making the driver get out and stand on the side of the road while the LEO conducted a “Terry Search”, and then calling in a K-9 Unit to dig for evidence when none is visible is SOP for shaved head, tattooed, roided up LEO’s. I sat on a grand jury for 1 entire year, and listened to upwards of 500 indictments every month. I sat there and watched the shaved head, tattooed, roided up LEO’s read the indictments month after month. I also sat there and observed the clean cut, no tattoo, professional, college educated LEO’s. It was interesting to see which ones reinforced the loss of respect from the general population. I will say that the Highway Patrol were the most professional, helpful, and prepared LEO’s of the bunch each and every month. I have a ton of respect for those LEO’s.

With one of my boats being a bowrider, with cushions under the windshields for leaning against and stainless round tubing bars circling the whole front of the boat, is this a legal place to sit while underway, if nothing is dangling over the side? Or do I need to refer to my boat as an anchored bow-sitter from now on?

I know one poster said this has been beaten to death on CF but this is honestly the first time I’m hearing about it. Gotta venture off the Striper pages a little more. I’ve been transporting people in those seats for 25 years AND I took the SC Boaters Safety course. Must have been snoozing through that one. I’ll admit when I sit on the top of my back to back loungers to get a better view the thought of falling overboard has crossed my mind. That IS pretty dangerous.

Thanks oakridge for opening my eyes.

What they don’t like to see are legs hanging off the bow when the boat is running faster than idle. Especially kids. Don’t ride with legs hanging off the bow. It’s OK sitting in the bow seat, legs inside the boat. Just keep everybody’s body parts inside the boat when planing. No problem.

Makes sense. Other than an occasional arm someone might put down to catch some spray, I don’t recall anything else sticking out.
Especially dangling legs off the front. Thanks for the clarification.

Please realize that was just my opinion based on my experiences and not to be taken as any kind of legal advice or authority. Use your own judgement. But common sense usually prevails. And if it doesn’t, Darwin might :face_with_head_bandage:

Follow Cracker’s advice… However, there is some grey area here… If it “looks dangerous”, then it will probably get perceived that way by a LEO. Kind of like the old “driving too fast for conditions” type of ticket. I can’t remember the name of the infraction, but it’s similar to that (“negligent operation” maybe???). You should double-check with DNR, but I bet if you had say a 3 year old up front sitting in the seat with no adult and you were driving 40 mph, you could still get some sort of ticket. But as Cracker mentions, common sense should prevail in this scenario. You wouldn’t do that anyway. So, if you have people up front with butt’s on cushions, I can’t see how you would get a ticket, unless you were hauling butt and it looked “negligent” to the officer.
