Beware DNR

99% of the DNR officers that I have encountered were very professional and reasonable. I’ve only had 1 encounter where I thought the officer was being unreasonable.

There is a growing perception that law enforcement is more about revenue collection than “To Serve and Protect”. It’s frustrating for people to keep up with all of the myriad of regulations, licenses, catch limits, etc. The fact that ignorance of the law is no excuse is of little comfort when you get a ticket for a life jacket infraction that is $100 more than your power bill for the Month of July. A $50.00 ticket would serve the same purpose of enforcing a safety code without bending some poor tax payer over the proverbial barrel. Pulling someone over because they crossed over the “fog line”, sticking their face in the car to “smell” for evidence, making the driver get out and stand on the side of the road while the LEO conducted a “Terry Search”, and then calling in a K-9 Unit to dig for evidence when none is visible is SOP for shaved head, tattooed, roided up LEO’s. I sat on a grand jury for 1 entire year, and listened to upwards of 500 indictments every month. I sat there and watched the shaved head, tattooed, roided up LEO’s read the indictments month after month. I also sat there and observed the clean cut, no tattoo, professional, college educated LEO’s. It was interesting to see which ones reinforced the loss of respect from the general population. I will say that the Highway Patrol were the most professional, helpful, and prepared LEO’s of the bunch each and every month. I have a ton of respect for those LEO’s.

I’m not a trooper, but also don’t have any tats, have never used any drugs or roids and have a college education… so where do i fall in your characterization? I have smelled my share of weed and alcohol in cars, but not sure that was MY fault. I do tend to give many, many more warnings than my friends who ar

Dear Blueline…How about my quote…“I also sat there and observed the clean cut, no tattoo, professional, college educated LEO’s” I’m going to take a leap here and guess that you are one of those. I don’t know what your beef is buddy, but I’m commenting on exactly what I saw, and exactly what I heard read from the indictments for 12 straight months, not a 1 time anecdotal occurrence. You know what I’m talking about, so get a grip. You may not like it, but there’s a cohort of LEO’s that give you guys a bad name.

My son received a citation from the USG for having a passenger on a 32 foot SF with legs hanging over the bow. It’s against the law and he was well aware of the law however he was more concerned about getting caught partying on Dad’s boat in the harbor at 3:00 am.
Long story short they gave him a $4,000 ticket. He was a college student at the time and could not pay the fine. I noticed at the bottom of the citation it said something about appealing. He wrote a letter to the port in Miami stating he was a college student etc. In about 6 weeks he received a letter stating they had reduced the fine to $2,000. Not bad but at the bottom of this letter it stated if you do not agree you can appeal, he did. This time a letter came back stating they had reduced the fine to zero. At the bottom of this letter it stated if you do not agree you can appeal! lol My point is appeal, appeal , appeal.

People will forget what you said…
People will forget what you did…
But people will never forget how you made them feel.

“negligent operation”

DNR can apply the same negligent operation. This thread is one the big reason why they are having the DNR safe boating forums. All of this was and is being discussed.

We got checked on Murray by two very nice SCDNR officers this past Saturday. We were downrodding and they were vert quiet in their approach to our boat and a did very complete check of the boat, our licenses, equipment, etc. Then they left as quietly as they arrived. Never had any problems and actually enjoyed being checked. Only wish we could have shown them some bigger stripers than the ones we had.
