First, if people would be honest, and not try to return a rod THEY broke due to THEIR error, this would not be an issue. Second, Dude and Toothy, C Tackle is going to have to pay for shipping 2 TIMES, PLUS $39. That will come out to at least $65. Third, I find it interesting you two come and defend the manufacturer (I hope they are compensating you well) before you know the reason for the break. With that said, I DON’T KNOW the reason for the break, but could they at least not try to look at it (like other companies do) to try and determine if it was possibly a defect. $39 PLUS SHIPPING TWICE covers more than their cost. If it was their fault, they should eat it. Period.
Great work, RADDADDY, you’ve exposed the fact that I’m on the E21 payroll.
If you actually read my post, I never defended the manufacturer. The 2 points I made are 1) E21’s warranty policy is pretty standard among high end rod manufacturers, and 2) breakage is often not due to a manufacturing defect. I never said that your friend’s rod wasn’t broken due to a defect or that there is no such thing as a defect or whatever other words you try to put in my mouth.
Also, why would he have to pay for shipping twice plus $39? Their warranty policy clearly states that the $39 charge is for shipping and handling: http://www.farrisbrothers.com/docs/e21.pdf.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I’m a former pole vaulter. Under full stress a pole might bend 100 degrees, not unlike a fishing pole. If there is the slightest spike mark or ding due to careless dropping of a pole or leaving it on the ground… guess what. KA-BAM!!! a back flip and next thing you know you are on your face in the pit wondering what happened. Now, it’s easy to tell why the pole broke by how it broke. 2 pcs. It was a nick due to misusage. When it breaks in 5 pieces, this is over stressing of the pole.
I’d bet 9 out of 10 times a rod breakage is from a jig head ding or hitting the rod on some sharp surface and creating a small flaw. We all do this, probably at least once a fishing trip. When the rod sees big stress it will break there. I’d bet very, very rarely is it an original mfg defect. Depending on the material the rod is made of, and how it is sealed/coated/covered will make a big difference in how likely a user caused defect will cause it to break.
Congratulations Dude on the sponsorship. Seems like a tough gig after reading all the complaints with e21 customer service (you must run across these discussions a lot). There’s lots of conflicting info on the internet as to whether it’s $39 or $39 + shipping to get a replacement, so I called customer service. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! A $39 flat fee for a replacement is to me very fair, but you still have to ship the broken rod back to them, and you can’t cut it into smaller pieces (some companies DO allow this) to save on shipping back to them. You have to send a receipt, and get a return authorization from customer service. Again, GOOD LUCK. Going through a customer service hassle, then having to pay $60 or more to replace a $100 rod is again not worth it to me. Everyone’s entitled to their own purchasing decisions, though.

Um, OK. I don’t even own a Carrot Stix rod. I was just pointing out that their warranty policy is pretty standard. No reason to get your panties in a wad.
I have a Carrot Stick with a Stradic on it. Best rod Ive ever fished with. It holds up to turning big fish around. Caught a 4 foot blacktip while throwing a Clarkspoon at some Spanish earlier this year, talk about doubled over. Still fishing the same rod.
Now, with all that being saidTHEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!
