BI-OP-SEA (Isla Mujeres) Sailfish

Talked to the Captain last week and the report is that the fishing is on fire down there. He says that not that many boats made it down this year and they pretty much have a wide open ocean. They’ve been down there since January and only had 2 days where they didn’t get in the double digits. Their best day was 37 sails in one day. Also, the owner and captain’s wife fished 2 days back to back they caught 54 sails in 2 days out of about 90 bites! The ocean is alive down there and the birds and bait are everywhere.

Figured that I would pass the word on since there really aren’t any other reports on this board right now.

We are going down weekend after next and fishing a few days!

If anyone is interested, their website is:

And they still have a handful of days open:

FEB: 24th, 26th-28th
MARCH: 1st-3rd

And if you want to charter a local Charleston captain, there are a few including Grant Bentley 843-345-0149 on Home Run and Bobby Garmany on Benchmark

Couple more boats from SC but I think they are private, (and maybe benchmark is also, not sure)

Just a few more options to consider.

I was there last week and Ford told me they were 38 for 50+ on one particular day so the sailfish are biting very good there now.

i’ll be down there next week. should be excellent.

check http://twitter.com/SailfishReport and www.billfishreport.com for other isla updates

I will be down there next week with Grant. I hope the bite will still be on.

Boats N Hoes

I’ll be in Isla next week too. 2-20 to 2-28 staying at Na Balam Going to do some serious spearfishing, catch a few sails and drink way too much tequila.

Skinne, when does the bite usually last until? Will Rob and U post a report on the sails and diving/spearfishing after the trip. Might go down in March. Have fun, thanks

This is the first time that Rob and I have fished there, but I think that I remember hearing that the bite usually tapers off near the end of March. We asked about taking a sail with the spear if we could find a pack of locals to eat them, but we found out that it's a big "no-no" down there. You'll get blacklisted down there if you even toss a live bait at a sail. Anyway, we are taking our gear and hoping to get a few shots at some of the local reef quarry down there. You'll probably read about us on CNN under the headline "Two gringos get eaten by big shark."... I am going to take my video camera though and try to jump in on a few bait balls to see if I can get some sailfish footage as well...

oh the island of women, my pops and I were down there in 2002, first week of march and the sails were amazing. We were stayin in the mayan riveria near punta maroma and took a boat over to the island, tequila in a squirt bottle on the ferry with 5 foot seas is my best clear memory. after that all I remember was tons of sailfish. beautiful island, market was cool, diving was amazing, ill try to dig up some pictures, Ive been wanting to get back, but have wanted to cross some others off the list before a repeat trip.

The count down is on!

We will be searching for these (these are shots from isla that I found on the web):

on this:

Jason Thanks for the plug. The bite is probably the best since the late 1990’s. I was quite lucky to be down when the weather was good and the bite was fantastic. Released 175 sails in 4 days, had the opportunity to teach Jesse’s wife how to hook them on her own. She was “lit up” when she got the hang of it. The flights from Carlotte are direct and somewhat cheap. going back down on friday. Jesse has some days open. His cell is 252-202-5423 email biopsea@charter.net Thanks DAD

Going to bring my underwater camera. Would be awesome to jump in on a baitball. Are sailfish the only thing biting this time of year?
