Just got back from some great fishing down is Isla. My report won’t be as long as usual since it’s hard type with one hand. As some of you may know, I had a small error is judgement the day before my trip that ended up yielding a broken right hand (I’m right handed). I spent some quality time at MUSC in the ER on Saturday eve and hopped on a plane to Mexico 12 hours later.
MONDAY 2/22
Met up with Pathologyman at 0630 Monday morning and had to endure the “should have been here yesterday” stories for which they caught 40 sails! Made it offshore and got to catch a few off the famous bait balls, but the birds were few and far between. Ended up putting out the trolling spread and finding a good spot. The sails were red hot on the teasers. I’ve never seen so many teaser bites in one day. It never gets old to see a black torpedo honing in on a daisy chain. Very cool site. We ended up catching 21 sails that day. My wife got to crank in 9 of them.
TUESDAY 2/23
Pathologyman had an early flight so, we fished a half day. Never really worked any bait balls but instead focused on the trolling spread bites. Action was pretty steady and saw a lot of nice teaser action. Ended up catching 12 sails before lunch time and calling it a day.
FRIDAY 2/26
Spent a good bit of time searching for the bait balls in the morning running from bird to bird. Eventually dropped CharlestonDiving, his fiance, and my wife on a nice sailfish feast. You could see the black spots just 2-3 feet away from them. Rob got some great video and the girls said that their adrenaline was so high that they could barely breathe. It was almost noon before we finally quit messing with the snorkeling, but still managed to pull out 20 sails in the process. It was pretty crazy. We had bait just dangling from the riggers trying to get the divers in position and the next thing you know sailfish are trying to climb the outriggers to get to the dangling baits. Also, I went 3 for 4 hookups with my “strong arm”, but didn’t
