Hit the WMA for one last chance to stick one with the bow. Hung the stand next to a bedding area I located last year in hopes to catching these deer coming to the oaks. South wind was what I needed and it was perfect! No bugs but a spitting image of a hot summer day in the woods. 7:10 p.m. I hear movement behind me in the thicket and hold the bow close ready to draw, I see a helluva monster 6-point standing at 12 yards and mother nature pulls the bug card. Every freaking mosquito came out at 7:13 and began feasting on my exposed arms making it impossible to hold the sight steady!!! Bug spray had been sweated off obviously and no matter what I did it wasn’t enough. Old boy fed outta sight and realized that acorns needed to be eaten! Hot hot hot is what hunting is best described as during the month of October!
Why in God’s green earth do you not own a Thermacell???
God bless the “ignore” function.
Thermacel was in my bag and in my possession but wasn’t needed today. That is quickly gaged on the trek in when they follow you in then turn it on but I didn’t have the first one on me today until that opportunity came. What luck! Trust me the FMNF is good at growing trees and mosquitoes. I have to hunt with spray and the thermacel in the swamps and can usually get away with just spray on the hill.

There are over 60 species of mosquito in SC, and some only become active at dusk, some specialize in daytime biting, others nighttime biting. When they ‘turn on’ it’s usually a specific species becoming active. I’ve learned this the hard way. It’s awesome that you got so well set-up to be in a shot position. I’ve found that I can avoid most mosquitos at a pretty high elevation in my climber, but nothing is perfect
