Big Bull Reds

Good weekend out on the water with btshipp. Got ourselves some nice big bull reds with the occasional little guy. Caught them on cut finger mullet we got in the cast net. All were in between 33 and 39 inches. Always fun to see your rod double over and hear the scream of the drag.

Nice! You should sell that secret spot to CaptFritz.

Ha I don’t think anyone knows about it yet 23 :stuck_out_tongue:

To all the boats out there fishing the shallows off the oyster beds around this spot, that’s not where the big boys have been the last week. We’ve been catching shrimp in the creeks, then using the shrimp to catch bluefish and pins. Then we chunk up the blues or mullet into 2x1" cubes and fish them off the drop offs on the bottom, typically 10-20 feet of water. This has produced nearly 10 big bulls over the past couple days, not as fun as popping corks but effective as all getout. Biggest red caught in the shallows off the oyster banks was only 16 inches, released to get bigger. Good luck and tight lines folks. We’ll be back out at this spot hopefully on Friday, try not to feed all the fish while we’re at work . Hoping to get a tagged one soon, I want one of those DNR shirts!

How to the tides affect them fishing in deeper water? Do better incoming or outgoing?

We’ve only fished the incoming around this spot. The current around there is really strong right before slack tide and we’ve had no luck until it turns back around. Theres been times where every line we have in the water is getting blown up. The oysters on the bottom like to catch onto your rig and make you think you have something. You’ll know if you do… Deep water around this spot seems to be the key, if you cast into the shallows and on the little oyster shoals your bait gets picked apart by pinfish. Use shrimp until you get something to use for cut bait, then you’ll have a fish in the boat worth bragging about.

NICE REDS

My dad is coming in from out of town Friday so I’m gonna try and put him on one. He has had a string of rough times so I think it will be just what the doctor ordered if we can catch a few.

Good luck! Maybe we’ll see you out there

When the Bulls are running this time of year they will be on most any ledge in the harbor. There are a lot of spots you can find and catch em at. Nothing better than using your depth finder to find your own ledge and then slamming some bulls.

Pm sent

That’s exactly what we did, Red. Got tired of all the pinfish and small trout stealing our bait in the shallows so tried out the drop off and it turned out well I’d say.

Great advertisement with the pics. Should be an additional 20 boats there til christmas…thanks

Pretty sure one reason this site is around is to share information, you can catch these same fish at the grillage, drum island, the jetties, and anywhere else around the harbor. I’ve posted pics from this spot for weeks and we’ve never had any problem with crowding. I hope to see you out there catching a few as well, no need to be negative.

LooKS pretty secretive to me. But I've been out with 10 other boats not catching a thing while we were getting hits every time we hit bottom.

Thank you for the EXCELLENT report! Nice to see a post we can all learn from!

Not exactly a secret spot, but going for the ledges was something I had not thought to do.

I can see my house!

And just a friendly reminder, don’t hold a big red by there jaw like that. Hold them sideways and support there body weight that way instead of by their jaw.
