Got a little far afield with the discussion of pollution and Mercury advisory in all of our coastal black water streams. Unfortunately, we can’t point our fingers at one entity as being responsible for Mercury advisories. Coal burning has been implicated, but our state receives Mercury deposition from long distance sources in addition to natural back ground sources. Its the water chemistry, low pH and low oxygen conditions in the swamps that drain into these rivers, that allows the mercury to enter the food chain and accumulate as predators age and grow larger. The decommission of the Canady Generating station will help, but not much. So you want to do something about it? Reduce your personal consumption of fossil fuels. My soap box statement for the day… I am in agreement of harvesting every flathead, particularly in our blackwater rivers.

By releasing it without someone from DNR present to confirm the weight it can’t go into the record books, but still something to hang your hat on. Congrats on an awesome catch!
Mind me asking what river it came out of?
Pending!

I disagree. A non native species that has decimated redbreast populations should not be put back. Keep every flathead you catch.

All I can say is wow!
At some point in your life, one’s experience, dedication, luck, and a big fish all converge to make one heck of a special day.
Thank God I had the patience and wisdom to play that fish just right. It was no race to reel in that fish on 20 Pound test.
Special kukos go to Clay Henderson. He produces drifting stix. He gave me some try and boy did it payoff. Look him up on FB.
New state record 84# 9.6 oz. I may have to do a wall hanger!
