Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe

Ok so I have finally talked the “boss” into letting me get a new grill. Trying to decide between the 2. Need yalls pros and cons for each. My only concern is I want to buy 1 grill for the last time. Must be able to handle the weather 2 miles from salt water “rusting” Kinda like the Yeti vs a Coleman. Make the best case and size recommendations.

Both nice grills/smokers. I would also look at Vision and Primo models. A lot of people like the oval shape of the Primo. The Vision has a hybrid option which allows you to switch between gas and charcoal.

Here is a comparison of the BGE and KJ if you go that route.

I’ve been a proud owner of a Green Egg since December 25 2002 great present from my wife! Have use it at least twice a week since sometimes a lot more. Bought my son one for Easter in 2010. Have never had any problem with it, cook great, some learning curve but easy to learn. I use the same charcoal over and over by cutting off the air befor my ffod is done and let it finish cooking on the heat it retains! Love to have the small on on my boat but don’t have room!
after 15 years I would say mine has been well worth the cost, witch I thaught at the time was outrages!

I purchased the large Kamado with stainless hardware for the reasons you mentioned. Love it.

Cant post pic, says entity to large…Hmmm. Never had this issue before and not using photo bucket.

I bought a kamado joe from costco that had bad coating on the outside crumbled off in a year or so on the marsh. I took it back (heavy as %*&^)

That is the only time i’ve seen anything bad about them though - mine was probably a dud. I got a little weber and smoked two butts on it today for 12 hrs… i figure replace q5-10 is cheap enough on those.

My vote is primo out of those two. Oval size is a plus. The thing I like about the green egg is the cast iron grate. It won’t warp when searing steals at 800+ degrees. If money is no object then I would purchase a Kamado Komodo but I don’t have that option. I would look at the grill dome product if I liked the egg over the oval shape. It has all stainless hardware and custom colors. Since I can’t buy a Kamado Komodo I would buy a grill dome. I own an egg. The way these grills cook is second to none.

Green egg. Large.
Some Fritolas and wings from Friday night.

Kamado joe. You get way more out of the box than BGE. Very similar lifetime warranties on both for the ceramics. Look into the KJ divide and conquer system, it’s incredible.

I suggest the Big Joe. It’s what I have had for a year. It’s better to have the space and not need it, than need it and not have it. Last Saturday I did 4 butts, a whole packed brisket, and 2 racks of ribs. At once…

That looks great, Capt!

nice, Fritz!

Good looking eats Capt!

Made them again tonight with Venison this time and they were just as good if not better but I did a better job getting the temperature right in the egg.

I would look at backwoods smokers too. I have the party model and love it. Very versatile, can smoke or grill and has lots of racks. I’ve done 6 boston butts and 6 chickens and there was still room for more and only used 8lbs of charcoal.

Captain,

I see you have the stainless “stove top” on your egg. Is there a huge difference between it and the iron top that comes standard?

I refurbed that egg so I never had the daisy wheel setup. I can tell you the Smokeware Stainless cap allows for cooking in the rain and it stays on when opening the egg. I don't remove it between cooks either.
