Big red at night

Havent posted for a while figured id put one up…

Ive been fishing some docklights at night here lately for trout and having a blast. Went two nights ago with the 6wt and my girlfriend in the boat, and we were doing pretty well on the trout when we pulled up to a dock and I saw at least 20 big reds just chillin’ up under the light. I started to throw the spinning rod at them considering the docks and all the obsticles, but I though “ah what the hell” and picked up the fly. One cast with a shrimp pattern was all it took and i was locked onto a big red…

Now i’ll be the first to admit, I GOT LUCKY! with a 6wt you dont have the power to turn a fish, at least not a big red but this guy didnt run for the docks… instead he bolted for the deep water of the creek and took me down to my backing, even though he was still running at least he stayed out of the docks. After about 20 minutes I finally got him up to the boat. He ended up 31" and 12lbs… not bad for a 6wt:smiley:. I tried to take a pic, but the camera was on the fritz and I couldnt get the flash to work… gotta love that.

Good luck, and tight lines!

Nice. I love the lights! The bigger fish generally head for the deep water. In my experience it’s the small ones that head for the structure. Congrats.

I’d get that camera fixed.

yeah, I need to take it in and get someone to look at it… I know alot less about cameras then I do about fishin’

Mad Mike,
Great report. Do most dock lights hold fish?

As long as the water is deep around the dock and there is a good current you can bet on something lurking about.

How deep 3-6 or8-10?

The dock I was fishing was about 5’ deep, but the reds were layin’ shallower than that near the surface… we caught alot of trout off of other docks too, and it seemed like those with the most current did the best reguardless of depth. I fished at the top end of out going tide so the water was pretty deep no matter where I fished, I imagine depth would be more important at lower tides.

I’d say over five feet at low tide is necessary. Current is what you really need and like Mike said fish the top end of the outgoing tide.

How deep 3-6 or8-10?
