I had the pleasure of taking Chad and Brad out on my first official guided trip. They wanted to try for sheepshead out of the kayaks. It started out really slow with a bunch of small fish then all of a sudden boom maybe the biggest I’ve seen 24" long 12.5" tall. Kayak+10lb sheepshead= adrenaline I was shaking that’s how epic the battle was but Brad came out the winner. The better part of the bite came on incoming using oysters.
Good day … nice fish

Good thing you were in Georgia with the 10" minimum. Some of those fish wouldn’t even be legal in Charleston.

They were all over 10" most were over 12". We actually got checked by dnr they were going some kind of a survey on the fish.
Not bashing just pointing out they wouldn’t be legal in Charleston. Some people may not be aware there is even a size limit on Sheepshead now. The big fish are most certainly nice. Anything over 10lbs is a trophy in my book. Congrats.

I just don’t get it, Jamie. Conventional wisdom sez big sheepies go offshore in the winter to spawn. They don’t return inshore until the H20 temp. gets above 65 degrees. I have not been able to buy a sheepshead since last fall. Savannah is not that much further south than Charleston. How do you do it time after time ? Luck?

that’s funny right there
Jamie has been consistently making great catches for a good long time. I told him a couple of years ago on the coastal outdoors forum that he needed to quit his day job and become a fishing guide. Glad to see him doing it, he’s going to be one of the best

Don’t believe everything you hear. I don’t know specifically where those came from, but he usually fishes around the Brunswick area.
We’ve been catching them inshore in Port Royal all winter though. I don’t usually target them, but we’ve been getting them by accident while trout fishing on deep structure. I reckon some leave and some don’t.

Capt Mike Waller (Saltfisher Charters) has been catching them inshore all winter here in Charleston. He’s a sheepy whisperer

Well, no wonder. I usually resort to yelling and cursing.
I’ve been catching them in Charleston this winter but they’re small. Well besides a couple 3 - 4 pounders but the big ones are rare…well at least for me.
I did catch a 26" sheepshead in Feb. a few years ago. Only bite I got all day, glad it was a good one…
