Left the dock at 4:45. Flat ocean. Striaght out. Lines in on ledge @ 7am in 70.1 temp. 2 cudas and a lot of cutoffs on baits. I’m still upset b/c those are the only cuda’s that have ever left my boat alive. Both jumped off the hook as soon as the gaff was in their sight.
Pushed out for warmer water. Lots of flyers but not much other life. Ended the day with 5 dolphin. 1 slinger, 4 gaffers. All fish caught beween 240’ and 700’. Temp’s caught in were 70 to 74. Shane got the pro-drop-back award as he stung all three fish he caught on the 3rd and 4th dropback.
Stoped on the ledge at a huge 60’+ upside down floating tree on the way back. Trolled by it a few times, saw a huge school of dolphin, but nothing. We decided to pull lines in and tie off to the roots that were above water(the top of the tree was pointed straight down 60’ below) and try to chunk some cut up hoo to them. We cut up 2 bags of hoo trying to get these fish to start eating. They just hung out about 40’ below the surface and watched at all the chunks sink past them??? We tried everything but live bait(which we did not have). Never heard of dolphin that did not eat??? Any pro tips or ideas are welcome. We wished Derek had brought his spear gun. Left it at home. Great to be back on the water.

Tried the jig. didn’t work. I’m still having nightmares about not catching those dolphin. Low barometric pressure?? Who knows. Next time I’m throwing the cast net:wink:.
when you say jigs I take it you mean butterflys? If not try them or trolling by and letting the baits drop until they are almost verticle and push the throttle forward preety hard to make them the baits jum up quickly

any type of jig. We’ve caught them on everything from chunks of squid to the butterflys.
We had a bull come in to the boat while drifting last week and didn’t really seem interested in eating, but we just kept the ballyhoo in front of him for about 30seconds and finally, he inhaled it. When we cleaned him later on, his belly was stuffed with two big bonita and some flying fish. No wonder he looked at our bait so hard!
Just keep trying next time, they will eat; its instinct.
