I’m adding a 2nd bilge pump to my boat. What kind of hose do I want to use? I want the best and longest lasting one I can get.
Longest lasting is the colored pvc “suction” or “spa” type hose.
Smooth walls so won’t clog up, and it is very strongly reinforced so pretty hard to kink. The thickness also makes it hold up longer in the bilge. THe clear hose with poly reinforcement braided in it doesn’t last where there’s any gas or oil around it. Dry rots. That type hose is softer and will seal off where you clamp it, however.
The tradeoff with what I posted above is that you will need to use a little 4200 or boatlife sealant on the fitting and pump barbs or it will leak. It is hard to get a good seal just with double hose clamps because the hose is so rigid. Only a little sealant on the barbs is needed… Put a little on the barb, then just snug the clamps barely. After a day or two, go back and tighten the clamps down. Fast cure sealant will let you do the same thing in just a few hours. Also, don’t use 5200 unless you want to wrestle the hose and whatever you’re trying to get it off of for like 20 minutes whenever you need it to be OFF the fitting to exchange a pump or fitting…
