BILGE PUMP ISSUES

I have a 2008 Sea Hunt Triton 172CC and it seems the bilge pumps out a good amount of water every five (5) minutes or so. I have a wash down hose, live well and through hull transducer. Any suggestions on how to check if any one of these is leaking or is this normal? I don’t keep it in the water overnight that often but don’t want the pump to drain the battery then have inshore reef at the docks! Many thanks for any suggestions!

Put it on the trailer and fill it up with water! Park it on a concrete drive way and wait till you find wet spots. Found a small drip under one of mine over a bunk, when I jacked it up I found a split about 12" long hidden by the bunk. Mine leaked like crazy in the water but was hard to find on the trailer! Good luck!

Good info from boatpoor^^^ also;;;;;
Check plumbing to all live/bait wells built in coolers “if equipped” I’ve seen them split from freezing when not properly winterized especially if they have some age on them!!!:frowning_face:When bilge is bone dry elevate bow as high as possible plug all drains and supply ports ; then fill all above with water while keeping eye for any water appearing in bilge or draining from bilge drain!!!Good luck:smiley:

I WOULD NOT “FILL” IT UP WITH WATER.
RAISE THE BOAW AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND ADD WATER, DONT OVER LOAD IT WITH WATER, AND YOU MAY NOT FIND IT LIKE THAT.
PUT THE BOAT IN THE WATER AND START YOUR BILGE INSPECTION THAT WAY.

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

Take an old T-shirt and cut it into strips. (about 3-4 inches wide)
Wrap a strip around each one of your through hull fittings. Cover the hose clamp too.
Put the boat in the water and go about your normal business. Check for the wet rag when you get back to the ramp.

My leak was above the water line. It was a raw water wash down fitting going into the pump. When I was up to speed, the fitting would leak pretty good.
If I filled the hull with water I never would have found it.

I found a couple of leaks on my boat when it was very new. My bilge pump would come on about every 30 minutes to an hour.

One was the threaded brass drain plug plate that went through the hull. I found that it wasn’t sealed very well from the factory. I removed and resealed it with marine sealant and it has been fine since. I also found one of the corrugated drain tubes from the cockpit to the transom was split. Even though it was a couple inches long, I couldn’t see the split unless I looked really close and bent the tube some. I ordered identical tube from the manufacturer and replaced the whole 5 foot section.

I also suspect that the live well pumps may leak some where the pump assembly screws into the housing. If they do it’s not much.

After fixing the two bigger issues my bilge pump comes on once or twice during the whole trip and sometimes not at all.

Thanks for all the great advice! Upon investigation it looks like the raw water wash down is the culprit. Will be in the water this weekend for a test and will report back next week. Be safe out there and watch out for the greenhorns!
