Bilge pump pumping fuel?

I got back from the lake, and began to clean the boat and I heard the pump come on and smelled gas. Man this cannot be good. I pulled a few access port hole covers off to check connections with no luck. The boat is only a year and a half old. Anybody every had this happen or any suggestions? I had a bad vision of a dropped srew or bolt and a hole rubbed in the tank. Any help would be great. Thanks

My brilliant uncle decided to fill the gas tank through the rod holder at a marina… bilge kicked on.

Your uncle and a lot of other uncles. Happens a lot.

What kind of boat do you have HighTide?

Ifly, its a 18’ glassmaster bay. I’m going to check it out a little further today when I get off work. The bad thing is the boat was bought in 09 and glassmaster went out of buisness 08, so the problem I have now is no one to honor warenty. Thanks for the replys gents.

you are extremely lucky that a spark didn’t ignite your boat. the first thing that I would do is open all of the access ports to the bilge to ventilate and then get the batteries out. once you have removed any spark source, troubleshoot the fuel system. did you fill the tank on the way home? could be a loose vent hose puking fuel as the fuel expands. make sure all hose connections are tight. if you have a water seperator make sure cannister is tight. good luck and report back.

Fiberglass tank and “E” fuel?

Dernflatlander, thanks for the heads up, I took out batterys and had all access holes open after the bilge kicked on and I smelled fuel. The problem did not start until after I put some gas in, but only 10 gal. When I got home today I took out the drain plug and almost filled up a 5 gal. bucket. NOT GOOD! I have not checked all fittings that will come after kids go to bed tonight. Capt. Eddie it is a gray plastic tank I believe, The first tank was up to 10% e gas, but after that I found a place that has non e gas. Once again thanks for the help.

Rumblefish, honestly don’t know because I didn’t pay it any attention, wish I would have now. Its got an analog gas guage, I want to put a digtal gas gas on if anyone has any suggestions? What the current gauge says in the yard is not the same as on the water, really do not know which one is accurate.

I vote for fuel in the rod holder. There are those who have and those who almost did …

Ok, checked all my hoses and all are tight. The only thing that I couldn’t get an eye on was about a 1’ section at the back of the tank on the way to the engine. The tank is a moeller at least I do know that now. I’ve got the nose elivated about 3’ feet up and boat is completly drained. I’m going to check it out again in the morning to see if it is still leaking. I’m starting to second guess myself now about the gas in the rod holder, they are about 1’ from each other. I’m beggining to hope that I made that stupid mistake it would actually be a relief. So the next question is what do I use to clean the hull out with to prevent any damage from the gas.

plenty of commercial bilge cleaners at west marine

Saw the fuel in the rod holder gig at a gas station. High sided boat & the guy reaches up and feels for a hole, finds it & bilge pump came on at about the 38 gallon point. Not pretty.

I had a clean up in Mt Pleasant last year where a guy decided to put 50 gallons in his rod holder. Very costly mistake. After the gas bill our bill and Dhec giving him a ration of chit I bet he never does it again. I think our bill was around 4500.00 cause it got into the storm drain.

did it 9 years ago with a brand new seapro. the rod holder is very close to the filler cap. turned my head to talk to a buddy at the station and put around 33 gallons in the bottom. headed to charleston with the wife and luckily the wind was up too much to launch. discovered it at the hotel. went and bought several bottles of dawn detergent and around 10 or so boxes of baking soda. mixed those in the boat with plent water.after draining fuel. took a while and probably ten times to do this. called mt pleasant fire dept and they came out and chedked the fumes. only had apbout 3% fume rate. thank goodness we did not get a spark. i still say that is a bad design and have since met maybe 20 other dummies that did the same thing. good luck.

Bought a used '96 Seapro in 2001 and the former owner said that his son had inadvertently pumped some gas in the rodholder at some time in the past. I know it’s my imagination, but I have always smelled gas fumes from the bilge area of this boat (180CC). No leaks that I am aware of, but the gas smell persists. I have almost filled the rodholder on a few occasions myself. Flawed design, if you ask me.
