We took a bachelor party out for an overnight on Sat. Caught some dolphin and missed a sail on the troll to my swordfish spots. We put out the sword baits before sunset and had the first fish on while light was still on the horizon. It was a big fish and we fought her for and hour then pulled the hook. I ran us back up to where we had the bite and we deployed the baits again only to have a rod double over as we were sending it down. She jumped a few times and would burn down half a spool every time she got close. After an hour and a half we out three straight gaffs in her head and in she came. We she was a true 170lbs and an “charlestonfishing 250lb”. After running back up for another drift I started cooking some yellowfin and rice for dinner. As soon as I put the rice in the water we hooked another sword. I kept cooking dinner and about the time It was ready. We put her in the boat. She was around 53" and after being cored she went into the ice. We then hooked another that we had to begin the chase as soon as we hooked her. She took off toward the moon and jumped. (our jaws preceeded to drop) We had her on for an 2 hours and 40 minutes before she started some crazy moves with only 100 ft left. the hook pulled. It was a true sea monster that got away. She was a huge fish and all she left us with was 6’ of bill marks on the leader.
We had 2 more slashed baits and a shark bite.
The in the morning we filled the box with dolphin and caught a nice wahoo around 45lb.
If any one is interested in swordfishing give me a call. Out of 24 swordfishing trips I’ve boated fish on 22. (by the way never try on the full moon).
