Birth of a waterspout

While fishing out around the oil rigs right out of the mouth of the Mississippi River, we were pushing our luck fishing while the sky grew more threatening. As fate would have it, one of the guys hooked a BIG fish that he could not turn. So we chased the fish with the boat. The fight lasted over an hour…all the time the weather was worsening. I had the camera out to take a picture of whatever kind of fish we had hooked. I noticed a funnel forming in the approaching clouds. So, I snapped a picture. As the funnel continued to develop, I continued to snap photos. The attached photos shows what happened. We got to the point of either having to cut the line…or continue to fight the fish until the twister was upon us. That LUCKY fish! We cut the line and hauled a$$!!! Still got caught in the worst lightning storm I’ve ever been in. We got into the marsh grass area and just ran the boat into the tall reeds and lay down in the bottom of the boat, as lightning popped all around us. Don’t mess with Mother Nature!

Those pics are wild. good move on cutting that line and getting out of dodge.

That’s crazy! Glad everyone is ok. I have been in a few bad lightning storms before and that is some scary crap.

WOW.
crap. a water spout near an oil rig, mean gas will go up.

those oil rigs have nothing to do with fuel prices most of them are capped and ready to pump but the oil companys will not pump out of them. they are allowing the market price to keep going up to make more money.right now the are trying to get more permits to put up rigs off of florida do a search for active oil rigs and inactive rigs see what you come up with it will shock you

Most of those are natural gas platforms.

Very cool pics. Are they dangerous like a tornado?

Since returning from that trip, I’ve done a little reading. Waterspouts are not AS DANGEROUS as tornadoes. BUT, you can have tornadoes that occur over water. The waterspouts dissipate more quickly and are not as fierce, but I’m not sure how to tell the difference when on the water. I’ll stay out of the way of anything remotely resembling a tornado.

that is a really cool picture i heard someone saw one near winyah bay a few weeks ago but they didnt get pictures those pictures are really cool

Just throwing this up there but living down here most of all those rigs are not capped and they pump oil. I know a few guys who work on the rigs and they have seen some crazy stuff. Also fishing around those things are very fun. Anyone remember a few years back when all those water spouts touched down in front folly. made the post and courier.

Got caught in a lightning storm breaking in a boat for a customer. Was about 10 miles up the river when it hit and trees around me were getting hit so i hate to say it i put the hot foot to the floor and trimed up and was cruising at about 73 in a very bad down pour. pretty wild and will never get myself into a situation like that again.

From reds to marlin you got it.
