Bite is Picking Up

Fished a couple of days this weekend and found fish biting in between the rain. Weather was consistently overcast but I never actually got rained on until I had the boat on the trailer and was cleaning it up! Water temps in the Wando are down to 70 or so and despite all the rain the water has been reasonably clear. Only fished for Sheepshead once but did manage to have a friend land this nice 10lb fish. It was a great fight with the fish actually getting “stuck” for at least a minute before he managed to pry it out of some structure!

Fished shallow for reds and managed at least a dozen fish with most under slot, one in the slot, and 2 over. Most of the redfish were caught with a small finger mullet with the tail cut off on a carolina rig. All the reds were caught in less than a foot of water. On Sunday morning I found a bunch of Wando Trout in creeks at corners and along grass lines on the flats. I don’t fish for trout very often but I had a bunch of shrimp in the livewell, the tide was pretty high, and a guide was parked at the entrance to a flat I wanted to fish so I pitched shrimp on a popping cork for a while and probably put 20 at 13.75" in the boat.

Very cool. Sheeps are on my list of “fish to catch”.

Nice work man, I see I’m not the only one that does the “hold the fish a little closer to the camera” trick haha. Sounds like you got the best of all inshore species this weekend, great job. Never gone for sheepies but I’m sure that will change someday.

Nice Sheep! Just curious about cutting the tail on the FM, is that an old trick that makes them bleed thus attracting more bites? Just wondering if that works better.

Thanks

I always saw it as more of creating a distressed prey as opposed to putting blood in the water. Predatory fish such as reds and trout use their lateral lines to detect prey before they’ll use their olfactory system. Granted they’ll use all of their senses when it comes to finding food but the vibrations from the distressed prey will be picked up on faster than the blood in the water. Their predatory senses are pre-programmed to cull out the sick and the weak. The best part of this scenario is it’s not a matter of hunger.

Earn it everyday…

I cut part of the tail mainly so they can’t get away from the reds.
