Anybody gotten absolutely eaten alive around their knees while wading? A few weeks ago I did, but it was odd. No visible bites and didn’t feel anything for about six hours. I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep and started itching and it got so bad that I finally got up at 2am and drove to a CVS for Benadryl. I literally could not sleep through it. No bumps either until the next morning. I found it odd since the bites were all around my knees and just below them but no where else. Did I walk into a nest of something? It wasn’t chiggers, and the bites looked like big mosquito bites when swollen. Another interesting thought is my wife was out there pretty close to me wearing shorts and no bug repellant (it was very windy) and she was untouched. Pic is from next day. Not gonna lie I couldn’t help but itch until I got one of those Off! itch relief roller pens.

Any chance you waded thru some type of stinging jellyfish without knowing it?
Marsh Chiggers

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.
Sea Lice? Which as I understand are the larvae of jelly fish…I do not know that for sure but just a guess…

So…can anyone tell us anything about them?
Heard them called marsh chiggers.
No idea what they are.
They appear to be chiggers but last a week longer.
There is no remedy that I’ve found.
I NEVER wade in shorts anymore because of getting massacred by these critters, twice. Now, I spend a little money and buy a pair of Simms wading pants and strap on a pair of old boat shoes with socks. Socks? Yep. Keeps the periwinkles out of your shoes and the shrimp from poking you when you get still for a minute or two.
Was working on floats under a floating dock with a friend a few years back. I was on the dock handing tools and such to him. He was chest deep doing the work for about an hour. He ended up with about 50 bites around his chest and back right at the water line.
The two times I got them really badly, it was a distinct cluster around each leg just above the knees. Ergo, I think whatever it is, is either floating on the surface or just below it.
Anyway, long pants are completely effective in preventing infestations.

Good advice Palmer, thanks.
Dam marsh chiggers. That’s bad. I’ve been through exactly what you describe a few times and it sux. I now where long pants. I fish all over but only got bit up in the wando, never when I’m close to an inlet. Is the W where you got mauled? Friend got bit up on the JI side of the harbor too. I wonder if those bastards thrive in degraded water qualify… related to human waste runoff, development, fertilizer, etc
Put some clear nail polish on. It might help a bit.
LMAO
Fingernail polish ABSOLUTELY does not work.
Get some Tea Tree oil at Walgreens and dab it on the bite a couple of times a day. Instead of lasting two weeks, the itch will be gone in three days. This works for chiggers and tick bites too. Prevention is the BEST treatment.

I got those before behind Sullivan’s Island, last year I think. We decided it would be fun to wade in the creek with some floats for an afternoon. We were right, lotsa fun, but we paid for it. My wife never experienced a chigger bite before and was ready to check into the hospital. We were dodging floating patches of grass the whole time, I’m sure they were acting as a flotilla of chiggers.
