Man, I feel like a fraud. Been fishing in the saltwater ponds around Mt P lately, and caught my first two reds on the fly the other day, followed yesterday by this black drum. I know that people work years to catch these guys out in the inshore waters, (and I have walked many a mile on the flats trying to do the same thing), and this feels like cheating. Anyway, had a blast landing this guy!
Pond fish can be pickiest of fish at times, they’ve got multitudes of mullet, hadens, shrimp, crabs, croakers… in their face all year, everyday of their lives. Can’t say the same for river fish. If you convince one to eat your fly, you’re doin good. I fish the ponds mostly for baby tarpon and gator trout; saves me about $300 in gas money to go to the pond instead of driving to south florida.
Nice catch!
On a good streak for OTF!
