Black Drum

Anyone else catch a bunch of black drum lately? I have caught more 12-15" black drum in the past year than I have in over 7 years. Those guys are some good thick headed fighting fun on small tackle! Just wondering if I’m not the only one.

I remarked on this yesterday to a friend…for years when I was young we caught them pretty regularly, but for the most part they “went away.”

NOW…EVERYONE is catching them EVERYWHERE!

Sometimes I wish I could eat fish after seeing some of those dishes prepared so nicely with the lemon wedge and all…but I’m happy enough with the shrimp, crab, lobster, oyster and such! I know it’s quite the opposite of the usual allergies but I do what I can! LOL

Based on what I’ve seen, we must have had at least one very good year of black drum spawning success/recruitment (2014) and maybe two (2015). Lots more fish in the bottom and mid slot than normal. I can say, without a doubt, that I’ve seen more black drum up on the flats while chasing tailing redfish than I ever have. Catching quite a few while fishing for sheeps as well. Certainly a positive for our fishery.

I also agree, usual red spots have been slap full of black drum

Live shrimp on a popping cork in any shaded water has been absolutely loaded with black drum.

Awesome to see them around again in numbers

Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.

Yes very good numbers of black drum for me this year. I caught more black drum this year than all of my previous years combined i think

dang crazy thing for me, I actually targeted them in a favorite spot around the broad river and didn’t catch one? but… my son caught a keeper bsb that I’ve never caught in this spot.

We started catching them in numbers last fall in places we would normally get sheeps or reds, but they were small for the most part… most were around 10". This year, in the same areas, the numbers are down but they are all 14-16" fish.

I’ve caught 5-10 times more than ever in 35 yrs fishing in Toogoodoo and Wadmalaw Sound.I caught my biggest in Toogoodoo on Tues which was 18",I’ve caught bigger ones at the reefs but this was the biggest in the creek.

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

we caught a slot BD last weekend on a fiddler fishing the jetties for sheeps.
