I wasn’t sure where to post this but figured this would be the best spot. I am posting on behalf of my friend. He has a 7 year old AKC registered Black Lab up for adoption. He is a very protective dog and well trained. He has retrieving experience as well as duck hunting experience. The perfect home for him would be a child free environment that is a quiet home. He still has plenty of life in him and is a big baby. Please send me an email at alanlew_7@hotmail.com since I check that more than i do the website. His name is Gunner and he is about 160 pounds so please keep that in mind when you are thinking about it. Also I will need to know sometime this week. Thanks all and happy hunting.
160 lbs. Good lord that’s a big’un. I thought I had a hoss at 145 lbs.
Quote from The Complete Dog Book…The History and Standard of Breeds Admitted to AKC Registration, and the Training, Feeding, Care and Handling of Pure-Bred Dogs…New Revised Edition…An official publication of The American kennel Club…Labrador Retriever “Approximate weights of dogs and *****es in working condition-Dogs 60 to 75 pounds; *****es-55 to 70 pounds. Height at Shoulders-Dogs 22 1/2 inches to 24 1/2 inches; *****es-21 1/2 inches to 23 1/2 inches.”
Any pure-bred Labrador Retriever that weighs in at 145 to 160 pounds is morbidly obese, and so outside the breed standards as to be considered unsuitable for breeding purposes. I cannot imagine a Labrador Retriever that weighs MORE THAN 2X the breed standard. That’s a freak. That’s 10 pounds more than the top end of a Newfoundland.

OK. Great input. It really doesn’t have an importance to what I am trying to do here. I have been around this dog for years and he is definitely not obese. He is just a big dog. What I am trying to do here is find a good home for my good friend’s dog so he doesn’t have to give it to some random SPCA adopter.

Hey Mountaineer…You brought up the “He’s 160#'s, so take that into account” part. I’m responding as an advocate for breed standards that have been blown up by the “my dog’s bigger than your dog” mentality that is rampant in Labrador Retriever breeding. I’m also commenting that AKC registration is a joke these days. It stands for zero when a dog that far outside of the breed standard is allowed to be registered. I’m livid that Boykin Spaniel’s are now recognized by the AKC. It single handily ruined a once proud hunting dog, and turned it into a living “Salt Life Sticker” for wannabe Southern Sportsman. Your admirable intentions merely gave me a forum to vent my anger over what is happening to sporting dog standards by an ignorant “pet” owning public. I truly hope that the dog gets placed with a responsible owner. I personally believe that it is disingenuous to describe such an animal as a Labrador Retriever, AKC registration not withstanding. Check out Wildrose Kennels in Oxford, Mississippi and see if they have any dogs within 75 #'s of “Gunner” in their inventory. They’re the kennel that the Official Duck’s Unlimited dogs come from in case you’re not aware. Again, I’m in favor of your noble effort, but I’m at odds with your description for reasons beyond “Gunner’s” predicament.

The man is entitled to his opinion, this is a public forum. Im curi
I don’t understand what’s so wrong with someone helping another guy adopt out a well behaved, trained, hunt-ready dog that has a demonstrable ancestry… and by “adoption”, the dog is most likely free to the right home.
He can call it a ChihuahuaCabra for all I care, it sounds like a great dog for lots of folks who would make great owners.
… The Cross of Christ is the anvil upon which the hammer of evil wore itself out.
Those of you who don’t see the forest for the trees are as entitled to your opinion’s as am I. As I stated, I am an advocate for maintaining strict breed standards. Breed standards are the benchmark for preserving the purity of the breed, and it’s recognizable instincts for measurable performance relative to it’s intended purpose. I am appalled at the lack of standards, and the resulting inferiority of the American bred Labrador Retriever. Wildrose Kennels will not sell an American bred Labrador Retriever. They are exclusively English bred, and the reason is quite simple. The English breeders they buy from cull the inferior dogs. Is it not ironic that the kennel that trains the official Ducks Unlimited Labrador Retriever’s will not offer an American bred dog? The same thing is now happening to the South Carolina State Dog. Indiscriminate breeding that produces inferior dogs with multiple genetic disorders, behavior problems, and ugly ferret faced characteristics. For those of you who can clearly see the forest, you understand that my comments are supportive of the adoption effort, and the argument was confined to the description of a dog that is prototypical of the lax breeding standards in American Labrador Retrievers. It is my hope that my passionate argument reaches a few people, and helps to begin the reversal of a sad trend. Not being naive, I don’t hold any hope for the outcome. PetSmart has Holloween costumes for dogs on sale this week. Go figure.

Yeah! To hell with freedom of speech on a public internet forum, let’s have him banned for expressing his opinion!
Good luck with finding a good home for the dog. I hope to be in the position to adopt a dog of my own in a few years.
Why should bossdog be banned. Everything he said in his first post is true. There is no way that a full blooded lab that weighs 160 lbs is perfectly healthy.

********* AS far as freedom of speech, yes this is a public forum. I see no need in criticism. Don’t know about you guys. but I was taught that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Poor guy just wants to find a home for his friends dog so that he doesn’t have to put him in a SPCA. I would take him off your hands but I already have two dogs myself. Good Luck.
