Black oil leaking out of my lower unit

I have a small amount of black oil leaking out of my lower unit by the propeller and dripping off, looks like it is dripping out of the zinc/trim plate area. Looks like burnt oil.

You should not have black oil in your lower unit, unless something really bad is going on in there. I’d drain it and check it before the next trip for sure. Oil in the lower unit should be the same color it was when you put it in first.

My guess is that you’re actually seeing unburnt oil from the exhaust, which wouldn’t be unusual if you have a 2-stroke motor. Your exhaust is probably a through-hub exhaust, or the exhaust itself is fairly close to the prop.

What year, make, model, HP motor do you have?

Is it coming out of the hub, around where the prop nut is? It could be exhaust and has it been awhile since you ran the engine?

2 or 4 stroke? If 2 most likely unburnt oil like Redfish said.

2006 60hp Merc 2 stroke. It has been a while since I have run the motor and I was cleaning the ignition switch and may have pushed the choke a few times reinstalling the switch.

check lowerunit oil, but like the others said, most likely unburnt fuel

My 1993 Johnson 150 HP 2 stroke does that all the time. Black ooze drips from the prop exhaust hub after I run it on the muffs in the yard. I removed the oil injection and mix oil with my gas, so I guess it runs rich at idle, leaving unburned oil in the exhaust.

agree with with Spec my Johnson 200 will drop some
oil if it seat up for awhile with the motor trimed up.
Also mix my on oil guess sometime I mix it a little rich.

As long as it is smoking a little I know I have oil in the
getting to motor.

I try to run boat at lease 4 days a week from
