NOAA Fisheries Service has determined that the 2011-
2012 recreational annual catch limit of 341,747 pounds
for black sea bass has been reached. As a result, the
recreational sector for black sea bass in federal waters of
the South Atlantic from 3515.19’ N. latitude, (the
latitude of Cape Hatteras Light, NC) to Key West, FL,
will close, effective 12:01 a.m. (local time) October
17, 2011, through 12:01 a.m. June 1, 2012.</font id=ā€œsize4ā€>

Well said brother.

This is getting out of control. I would like to see the research that says there is a problem with BSB. Guess that means I will have to hone my Sheep head skills before the Government outlaws all fishing between Oct and June.

A wise man once said ā€œDo as I say not as I doā€ Good advice when I tell you that.

who is going to enforce this? I have fished for more than 50 yrs and been checked once!

Not to change the topic…don’t agree with sea bass closing. They are the rabbits of the sea. But something does need to change with sheeps.

Good point. Not to mention that they are out of money pretty much.

Umm, you gonna eat that?

Thousands have died to save my freedom. Only one has died to save my soul!

fishcrazy, I agree with you on that. This site has shown in the past that some people don’t think conservation. My point is just because you catch a boat load doesn’t mean you have to keep a boat load.

SCDNR has meetings scheduled Oct. 17, 18, and 19 to discuss the future of the Sheephead fishery. They are going to be next.

Long Enuff

Long enuff, is that going to be open to the public

Yes, open to the public FWIW. So they can tell us what they are going to do to us, not because they want our input.

Maybe if we showed up with signs and chanted NMFS= no more fishing season and other slogans they would acknowledge us.

I tell you what get out there and catch 10 bsb and hang around Remleys for awhile. Come back and report. Seems eveytime I am out DNR checks me, not that its a bad thing. Still this sucks you can catch all you want at the jetties when nothing else will bite. NMFS can shove it.

fish today work tomorrow

The meeting needs to be mobbed with some ticked off folks. The time for politeness is over. Do just like the occupy wall street gang are doing. Maybe that will get on the news. That’s what really needs to happen. Get on the news.

Umm, you gonna eat that?

Speak up!!! Even if you don’t fish for them.

Sheephead will be next.

Spiny Lobster got cut to 2 per trip (rec and commercial) when nobody said anything… the basis for the limit was that nobody targeted them so they allocated the biomass to florida. The 2 per limit starts at the florida line.

The exact status and health of sheepshead populations in South Carolinas coastal waters is
uncertain at this time. The species is managed in federal waters (3 to 200 miles offshore) along
the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina through Florida as part of the South Atlantic Fishery
Management Councils (SAFMC) Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Unit, in accordance
with the SAFMCs Snapper Grouper Management Plan (SAFMC 2005). Federal recreational
harvest limits of a maximum of 20 fish per person per day, with no minimum size limit, are
enforceable in South Carolina waters in accordance with current state law, but no separate state
recreational creel or size limits apply.

Where did you hear this? I couldn't find anything on this topic. Do you have a link? If this is true, then this is a nightmare.

The nightmare began when they put the Edisto MPA in over the best 140-160ft live bottom off Charleston after they promised they were only interested in protecting deep water species…

Next came red snapper suddenly in a CRISIS and 9500 square miles of bottom threatened with SHUT DOWN.

Everyone wants to keep thinking it won’t happen to what they like fishing for though…

Keep right on believe the spin doctored BS and the excuses. Keep on sending your money and support to folks you don’t have the guts to investigate and hold accountable.

KEEP ON BEING APATHETIC.

YOU WILL BE THE ONE TO BLAME, AND NOBODY ELSE.

We all have to agree that the problem is with the management process and law. The problem is not some fishing group or some particular state. The sooner you face that reality, the sooner the people manipulating all this will get taken to task and driven off the scene.

Stop letting people confuse you about what is going on in the BIG PICTURE here.

Dang! I think you are talking about me! :face_with_head_bandage:

OK… Try to keep it simple, but what should I do?

This is total BS. I have caught the most and best seabass ever this year.
