Skinnej, your knowledge of the salt certainly surpasses mine, and you have been forefront to keep our fisheries open to all of us. But I beg to disagree with you when you say there is no conspiracy. It is easy for us to forget that there are so many people in this country who have no sympathy for our cause. They may have good intentions - to save the world - but They are perfectly willing to do it at the expense of those of us who like to fish (and hunt). They go by all sorts of names, from this Club to that Foundation, but, make no mistake about it, They are conspiring against us, and They have lots of dollars to help sell their cause. I have caught my fish and killed my game, but I really fear for the freedom of my grandchildren to legally do the same. Worst, They have made it appear that what is illegal is also un-ethical, and I struggle with the difference.
Can't say that I disagree.
I guess that I should have been a bit more specific. There are all sorts of conspiracies out there, and I guess it depends on how one defines a “conspiracy”. You are right… There are definitely groups out there that want to “save the world” and don’t care if they step on fishermen. I believe that accurately represents PEW (at least what I believe their motivation to be). I also think that there are a couple influencers in the council who have been around for 20+ years who have made the decision decades ago that the only way to manage a fishery is through MPA’s and their mission is how do we get there. I think that they just talk through both sides of their mouth to get what they want from fisherman and PEW ultimately to acheive their goal. Again, I’ve seen at least one of them eating sushi @ Nakato in West Ashley, so I know it’s not that he cries every time a fish dies. I think he

Awesome discussion but Phin is right. Last week we actually caught more grouper and ars than seabass but if you hit the artifical reefs and the seabass are out of control. The pics i have posted above are at the tire reef and the ross.
Diving live bottom we see seabass on every dive but there is a better balance. Seems the grouper are eating well offshore. Whats more of a concern is the lionfish. We did a drop in 150 on a wreck and there were hundreds of lionfish on it
I caught a 14.7 inch sea bass up Shem Creek yesterday on a baby flounder that bit my electric chicken while cleaning short grouper.
I should have weighed him in for the trident.
With rates so low, now may be the perfect time to refinance or purchase your dream home. If you are thinking about home financing give me a ring!</font id=“blue”>

Careful now Airbus…are you saying that Lionfish which are NOT PROTECTED are a bigger problem than bsb which ARE PROTECTED? Next thing you know LSK will be losing her bsb to them fishing off the deck at Reds! All kidding aside I have only been fishing out of Charleston for 7 years and I’m sure a lot of my “data” is skewed since I hope I have become more proficient at catching stuff. However in one area in 110-120 feet that I have fished regularly it used to be that vermillion were hands down the #1 fish we would catch followed by triggers, and occasional pinky and NO bsbs. This year in the same area #1 is bsb (of all sizes), followed by red porgy (mostly undersized) and only an occasional vermillion. Recently, the bsb seem to have been feeding mostly on crabs and other crunchy critters although earlier in the year they were definitely tossing up baby vermillions. So, is this just me or are the rest of you seeing a similar shift in species abundance?

Uh oh… The limit on dolphin is so rediculously high right now, most people wouldn’t care if they cut it in half, but if I remember, there were talking about going to 2 wahoo per boat last year…
Phin said it. Individual States should be allowed to manage things on thieir own. Another aspect aside from # of acres of fishing grounds is “opportunity to fish”. If we sit down and think about it, the amount of opportunity to get out and fish for most of us is small compared to South Florida. Mother Nature keeps us inshore most of the time. I may get offshore to fish maybe 1-2 times/month and all of that is depandant on weather and work schedule. I’d say that goes for most of us here. Throw in the price of gas and how much we spend actually getting somewhere to fish all goes in to how low our fishing pressure really is compared to Florida.
SC is a great example of how WE can manage things on our own. Just take a look at our Redfish population now compared to 10-15 years ago. + We have the licence plate to prove it.
As with any topic of management this has provided a lot of input, which means we care about our resources. If only the people telling us how to live our lives would lesson to us we might all be better off. I am with the people who beleive a state regulation is the way to go. One problem with that. Ansd I beleive it came up a while back by Phin about out of staters coming here to deplete our resources when theirs are closed. There is no simple answer to protecting our resources so lets all work together by voteing out the people who care more about politics then the people they effect.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
We fished from the jettys to 100ft over the Labor Day wknd and could NOT get away from the bsb.Impossible to get a livie down through them to grouper fish.I caught them on live 6" firemouth grunts…a first.Every bsb over 6" offshore was spitting up juvie vermillions and red porgies.

critical/essential habitat for pelagics is already mapped out
I have posted links to where the most critical area off SC is the entire GTH.
you guys keep reading what me and skinneej have been saying and brushing it off.
What can you do?
For a start- Ask what candidates for office know about this debacle and what they will DO for us just as often as you ask what their positions are on gun control and taxes!
We have to have more public buildup and pressure on elected officials to ACT or else all the money our opposition is pouring into this joke of a machine to shut us out of our access and freedom to fish is going to beat us.
No brushing off here. Unfortunately it will take many more closures, and fishing pretty much gone before the majority of the public realizes what is/has happened. Only then will there be enough pressure to fix things the right way.
Uh oh… The limit on dolphin is so rediculously high right now, most people wouldn’t care if they cut it in half, but if I remember, there were talking about going to 2 wahoo per boat last year…
How the heck does anybody know if dolphin are overfished or not? These fish grow, multiply, and die so fast, what basis does any of this come from?

I think that their main data will be catch rates for the past N years... If catch rates are in decline, they I would expect some type of action... Again, there is a LOT of wiggle room, so I don't anticipate any of them getting burned at the stake, at least not for dolphin. If they took the boat limit from 60 to 45, I doubt many would show up at the meetings, so they will probably just chip away at it slowly...
I can’t remember where, but I saw the “dolphin landings” data a year or so ago and there was room for interpretation in the data. I know that this was presented to the SAFMC, but the feeling that I got was that the biologist that gave them the data didn’t necessarily have a firm opinion (if any opinion) that overfishing was occuring. I guess that we will see how the almighty, all knowing, and all powerful “Council” (aka “League of Shadows”) interprets the data…
Honestly, I don’t know of much else you could use for a fish that only lives a couple of years.
As for wahoo, they will probably use a combination of data including catch rates and age structure. Not sure how much data they have on age structure and I haven’t seen A

Catching and keeping 60 mauis is possible and done. Don’t burn me at the stake, I hate these dumb a$$ regs plenty. That being said it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to see the boat limit at 45.
