Black Sea Bass questions...

What’s the top 1 or 2 preferred bait for BSBs when bottom dropping on nearshore reefs?
Do any baits work better for getting BSB bites and not so many sharks?

They seem to hammer squid very reliably. Not sure about the shark issue though.

If the sharks want to bite they will 100% get it before a seabass. Your question assumes that sharks are always present AND that seabass are always present. Fishing for seabass is the most simple form of bottom fishing. Sharks move through the entire water column and seabass are mostly on the bottom 20 ft. Squid and cut bait will catch seabass if they are there and want to bite. Sometimes if the sharks are bad you have to completely leave that spot or a several mile area and go somewhere else.

We have not taken any bait Black Sea bass fishing for the last several years. We have used a variety of jigs from about 2 ounces to 5 ounces. The colors vary, and we often use double jigs. The BSB we have caught were bigger, and the sharks were not as troublesome. You will not, however, catch as many small BSB.

Spro bucktail with a strip of cut bait on it.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like my best bet is to just move when sharks are thick rather than try to find the bait that only BSB will bite.

When I was running head boats, Sharks were a bad problem. A 2 hook rig with a 16 oz weight cost a little over $3.00. If 50 people hooked up a shark that often ruined $150.00 in rigs. I would quickly move the boat.
